The Longhorns hit the woodwork twice while out-shooting the Hoyas during the match, 15-9

AUSTIN, Texas – On Sunday night in the 2021 home opener at Mike A. Myers Stadium, Texas soccer (0-2-1) managed to hit the woodwork twice and out-shot No. 11 Georgetown (2-0-1) during the match, 15-9, but couldn't find the net as the Hoyas utilized a goal in each half to prevail, 2-0.

Texas Team Notes

Texas freshman midfielder Lexi Missimo struck the crossbar on a shot at 31:52, while fellow rookie forward Trinity Byars hit the left post with a blast at 85:36.
Texas dropped to 16-11-1 all-time in home-opening matches and 5-4-1 under the guidance of head coach Angela Kelly.
The Longhorns out-shot the Hoyas in overall shots (15-9) and shots on goal (6-5) while also leading 54-46% in possession time and 4-2 in corner kicks.
Sunday's meeting marked the first between the Texas and Georgetown soccer programs.

The Details

It was the Longhorns with the best of the early going as freshman forward Holly Ward started things off on a blocked shot at 9:05.

Byars and senior midfielder Julia Grosso soon forced a trio of saves by Georgetown keeper Allie Augur during the 14th and 15th minutes as the Longhorns swarmed their offensive third.

The Hoyas eventually started settling more into the match as Julia Leas (16:11) and Tatum Lenain (19:47) managed Georgetown's first two shots of the match on blocked efforts.

It was a great pass from Leas that helped get the Hoyas on the board at 28:33. The midfielder delivered a through ball between Texas defenders right into the path of an on-the-run Gia Vicari. The forward received the pass, made a quick move to her left around diving UT keeper Savannah Madden and tucked the ball in the open net from 12 yards out to make it 1-0.

Missimo came tantalizingly close to a Texas equalizer at 31:52 as her shot from outside the top of the 18 bent wildly before rattling off the top right corner of the woodwork.

At 33:48, Byars took possession in the middle and hit a shot that was blocked out to the left side of the 18. The ball ricocheted to Grosso, and the Vancouver, British Columbia, native followed with a quick attempt that was somehow batted outside the left post by a diving Augur. On both attempts, there were numerous appeals for handball that went unanswered by the head official.

Out of the halftime break, it was Georgetown with the run of play over the opening 10 minutes as GU registered a pair of corners and a shot from Kelly Ann Livingstone that forced Madden into action.

After multiple threats to start the second stanza, the Hoyas doubled their advantage to 2-0 as Maya Fernandez-Powell scored from the top of the box at 56:10.

At the other end, Texas senior forward Mackenzie McFarland made a run up the right side and hit a shot from 14 yards out (61:17) that Augur saved out for a corner. On the ensuing set piece, freshman defender EmJ Cox leapt above the crowd in the middle of the 18, but her headed effort traveled well wide left.

Down the stretch, Texas kept fighting as the Longhorns nearly pulled a goal back during the 86th minute. In possession on the right wing, Byars blasted a shot from 14 yards out that traveled all the way across the goal mouth before rattling off the left post. On the ricochet to the left of the box, freshman midfielder Lola Stanley tried a quick volley follow-up, but her effort struck the side netting.

From there, Georgetown managed to do the work needed to run out the clock on its 2-0 victory.
