No. 19 Men’s Golf concludes play at Big 12 Match Play Championship with win over Baylor

The Longhorns recorded a 3-3 tie against No. 1 seed Texas Tech and followed with a 3-1-2 victory over Baylor on Wednesday at Houston Oaks.
HOCKLEY, Texas — The No. 19 Texas Men's Golf team claimed a 3-3 tie against top-seed Texas Tech to conclude pool play and followed with a 3-1-2 victory over Baylor in Wednesday afternoon's seventh-place match to wrap up competition at the Big 12 Match Play Championship at Houston Oaks.
Freshman Keaton Vo registered an impressive 4-0-1 individual mark during the event, while senior Travis Vick added a 3-1-1 record. As a team, Texas posted a 2-1-2 record during its five matches over the three-day tournament.
During Wednesday morning's match against Texas Tech, sophomore Alejandro Gonzalez registered a 3&2 victory over Jack Wall and Vick added an impressive 3&2 win against Ludvig Aberg. Aberg entered the tournament at No. 2 in the latest World Amateur Golf Ranking (Oct. 12). Vo also posted a 4&3 victory over Matthew Comegys.
With the tie against Texas Tech, the Longhorns finished pool play with five total points for the fourth-best total in Pool A. Texas Tech earned the top spot in Pool A with eight points, followed by TCU and K-State with seven points each.
Texas was paired against Baylor, the fourth-ranked team in Pool B, during Wednesday's final round of match play. Gonzalez finished the day with a perfect 2-0 mark after registering a 2&1 victory over Zach Heffernan. Vo followed with a 2&1 win against Jonas Appel, and freshman Christiaan Maas recorded a 3&1 victory over Trey Bosco. The Longhorns also received ties from seniors Mason Nome (against Luke Dossey) and Vick (against Johnny Keefer).
The Longhorns return to the course when they compete at the East Lake Cup on Monday, Oct. 24-Wednesday, Oct. 26 in Atlanta, Ga. The prestigious event showcases each of the four teams that advanced to the NCAA Semifinals the previous season. Texas won the 2022 NCAA team title, marking the fourth national championship in program history.
Texas ties Texas Tech, 3-3-0
- Sophomore Alejandro Gonzalez earned a 3&2 win against Jack Wall. Starting on hole 1, the two players halved the first four holes. Wall claimed a win on hole 5 but Gonzalez answered by winning holes 7, 8, 9 and 11 to build a 3-up cushion. Wall won hole 13 to trim the margin to 2-up, but Gonzalez won hole 16 to finish off the 3&2 victory.
- Senior Travis Vick claimed a 3&2 victory over Ludvig Aberg. Starting on hole 2, Aberg won holes 3 and 5 to take a 2-up advantage. Vick won back-to-back holes at 7 and 8 to even the match. Vick added a win at hole 10 to grab a 1-up cushion, but Aberg answered by winning holes 11 and 13 to re-take a 1-up lead. Vick then won four straight holes (14, 15, 16 and 17) to close out the 3&2 win.
- Freshman Keaton Vo posted a 4&3 win against Matthew Comegys. Starting on hole 3, Vo won holes 4 and 6 to build a 2-up cushion. Leading 1-up after Comegys claimed a win on hole 11, Vo won holes 12, 13 and 14 to take a 4-up lead. Vo halved the following three holes (15-17) to close out the 4&3 victory.
- Freshman Jacob Sosa dropped a 3&2 decision to Baard Skogen, while freshman Christiaan Maas fell by a score of 3&2 to Calum Scott. Senior Mason Nome dropped a 3&2 decision to Tyran Snyders.
Texas defeats Baylor, 3-1-2
- Gonzalez finished off a perfect 2-0 day on Wednesday with a 2&1 win against Zach Heffernan. Starting on hole 13, the two players halved the first five holes. After the two players traded wins on holes 18 and 1, Gonzalez won holes 2, 3 and 4 to build a 3-up cushion. Heffernan answered with a win on hole 5, before Gonzalez won hole 8 to re-take a 3-up lead. Heffernan won hole 10 to trim the margin to 2-up, but Gonzalez halved the next hole to close out the 2&1 victory. Gonzalez completed the Big 12 Match Play Championship with an overall individual record of 2-2-1.
- Vo also went 2-0 on Wednesday and earned a 2&1 victory over Jonas Appel. Starting on hole 14, Appel won the opening hole before Vo responded with a win on 16 to even the match. Appel won hole 17 to re-take his 1-up advantage, but Vo earned wins on holes 2 and 3 to grab a 1-up lead. Appel answered by winning back-to-back holes at 4 and 5 to build a 1-up cushion. Vo won holes 8, 10 and 11 to grab a 2-up advantage and halved hole 12 to finish off the 2&1 win.
- Maas posted a 3&1 win against Trey Bosco. Starting on hole 15, Maas won the first two holes to build a 2-up lead. He won hole 1 to increase the margin to 3-up and held that advantage for the next six holes. Bosco rallied to win holes 8 and 10 to trim the deficit to 1-up, before Maas responded with wins on holes 11 and 13 to close out the 3&1 victory. Maas completed the Big 12 Match Play Championship with an overall individual record of 3-2.
- Vick claimed a tie against Johnny Keefer, and Nome registered a tie against Luke Dossey. In both matches, Vick and Nome trailed by 1-up margin entering the final hole. Vick won hole 14 over Keefer to even the match, while Nome earned a win on hole 13 to square that match.
- Freshman Jacob Sosa dropped a 1-up decision to Drew Wrightson.
