The Details
Texas' Scott wasted no time reminding everyone of her impressive speed leading off the bottom of the first. The Angleton, Texas, product opened with a walk and quickly swiped second to reach scoring position. Dayton stepped up and dropped a bunt towards third. Odessa managed to field the ball and just retire Dayton at first, but Scott motored all the way around from second to hand her teammate a RBI and grant the Longhorns a quick 1-0 lead. With one retired, Brandon walked and soon managed to scamper all the way around to third on a wild pitch. With runners stationed at the corners after a Courtney Day walk, Brandon pulled off a delayed swipe of home to make it 2-0.
The Longhorns added three more runs in the bottom of the second to nab a 5-0 advantage. UT loaded the bases with one down on Corona and Popelka infield singles and another Scott walk. That set the stage for Dayton as the Wylie, Texas, native launched a base knock to center to plate a pair. Brandon soon followed with a RBI groundout to short to score Scott.
In the bottom of the third, the Burnt Orange & White offense put a five-spot on the board on six hits to double its lead. After freshman catcher Reese Atwood got the assault underway with a leadoff base knock to center, five consecutive one-out hits, highlighted by a two-run single from Corona, a RBI single by Popelka and a RBI double from Dayton, boosted the Texas advantage to 10-0.
After Odessa College broke up the shutout by plating a single run in the top of the sixth, the Longhorns registered single runs of their own in the seventh and eighth innings to make it 12-1. Maloney delivered a two-out RBI single in the seventh, while Whitaker led off the eighth by bombing a towering solo shot to deep left.
Things got completely out of hand in the bottom of the ninth as Texas scored nine runs in finalizing a 21-1 score line. The outburst was highlighted by a two-RBI Quiroga double, a Whitaker RBI single, a two-RBI Martinez triple, a Goode RBI double, a Dayton two-RBI triple and a Whitaker RBI double.
