No. 19 Men’s Golf falls 4-1 to No. 25 Pepperdine in East Lake Cup consolation match

ATLANTA, Ga. — The No. 19 Texas Men's Golf team dropped a 4-1 decision to No. 25 Pepperdine on Wednesday afternoon in the Match Play consolation match of the East Lake Cup at East Lake Golf Club. Senior Travis Vick earned the lone individual win for Texas on Wednesday. Vick claimed a 1-up victory against Derek Hitchner.
The eighth annual East Lake Cup featured the four semifinalists from last year's NCAA Championship, including defending national champion Texas, runner-up Arizona State and semifinalists Vanderbilt and Pepperdine.
The East Lake Cup marked the final competition of the fall season for the Longhorns. Texas will return to the course at the Southwestern Invitational on Jan. 30-Feb. 1 (Monday-Wednesday) in Westlake Village, Calif.
The Lineup
- Senior Mason Nome fell by a 1-up margin to Ian Maspat. The two players were all square entering the 18th and final hole, where Maspat won the hole to clinch the individual victory.
- Sophomore Alejandro Gonzalez dropped a 7&6 decision to Luke Gifford.
- Freshman Keaton Vo fell by a 1-up margin to Sam Choi. Vo held a 1-up advantage thru 16 holes, before Choi won the final two holes to claim the individual victory.
- Freshman Christiaan Maas dropped a 4&3 decision to William Mouw.
- Senior Travis Vick earned a 1-up victory against Derek Hitchner. Hitchner held a 3-up advantage thru the first eight holes, but Vick answered with back-to-back wins on holes 9 and 10 to trim the margin to 1-up. Hitchner responded with a win on hole 11 to increase his cushion to 2-up, before Vick won three-straight holes (12, 13 and 14) to take a 1-up advantage. The two players halved the final four holes, and Vick finished off the 1-up win.
