Former Longhorn is the sixth-youngest player to reach No. 1 in the 36 years of the OWGR.
AUSTIN, Texas — Former University of Texas star Scottie Scheffler moved to the top of the Official World Golf Ranking on Monday following his victory at the 2022 WGC – Dell Technologies Match Play on Sunday. The win marked Scheffler's third title in his last five starts and six weeks after his first career PGA TOUR victory.
In exactly 36 years of the Official World Golf Ranking, Scheffler becomes the 25th player to reach No. 1. He is the ninth player from the United States to climb to the top spot and the sixth-youngest player to achieve the feat.
Scheffler, 25, is just the sixth player to reach world No. 1 at the age of 25 or younger. He joins Tiger Woods, Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas and Jon Rahm.
His ascent to the top of the world game comes just 42 days after he claimed his first PGA TOUR title, beating the previous record held by Tiger Woods by 210 days.
Only Tiger Woods and Jordan Spieth needed fewer starts as a pro to reach the top spot. Woods needed just 21 starts to reach No. 1, while Spieth did it in 77 events as a pro. The WGC – Dell Technologies Match Play marked Scheffler's 92nd start as a pro.
Scheffler turned pro in the summer of 2018 following his graduation from The University of Texas, earned the Korn Ferry Tour's Player of the Year in 2019 and claimed the PGA TOUR's Rookie of the Year Award in 2020.
Scheffler previously claimed the title at the WM Phoenix Open on Feb. 13 and the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by Mastercard on March 6. He is one of 17 different former Longhorns to claim a win on the PGA TOUR. Those 17 individuals have now combined to capture 94 all-time PGA TOUR victories.
