Jilly Shimkin (two goals – 35’ & 82’) and Sydney Nobles (15’) scored for the Longhorns against the Bobcats
AUSTIN, Texas – The 2022 spring schedule is off to a perfect start for Texas soccer as the Longhorns utilized a brace from freshman transfer midfielder/forward Jilly Shimkin and a goal from junior forward Sydney Nobles to roll past Texas State on Saturday afternoon at the Bobcat Soccer Complex, 3-0.
The Burnt Orange & White are currently playing without the services of freshman standouts Lexi Missimo (USA), Trinity Byars (USA) and Holly Ward (Canada) as all three are on international duty preparing for quarterfinal play (March 8) at the CONCACAF U20 Women's Championship in the Dominican Republic.
It was Texas State that managed the match's first scoring opportunity, just four minutes into the first of three 30-minute blocks, as senior goalkeeper Savannah Madden was forced to make a point-blank save on a shot off a corner kick before corralling the rebound.
The Longhorns began to establish more control over the next few minutes, registering four shots in quick succession.
During the 15th minute, Shimkin played a short corner to freshman midfielder Ashlyn Miller. The McKinney, Texas, native quickly delivered a pass towards the near post where Nobles was waiting to head it past the keeper for a 1-0 lead.
Just two minutes into the second 30-minute block, Shimkin nearly got on the board goal-wise. Unfortunately, her shot off a through ball from senior defender Emma Regan clanged off a post.
The Burnt Orange & White's advantage doubled to 2-0 during the 35th minute. Senior forward Mackenzie McFarland delivered a cross into the middle that was deflected by Texas State's net minder. The ball bounced straight to freshman midfielder Tati Fung, who controlled it, and passed to the penalty spot for a Shimkin left-footed finish.
Finally with eight minutes remaining in the final 30-minute session, Shimkin and junior forward Teni Akindoju played a quick one-two between themselves before Shimkin unleashed a drive from the top of the 18-yard box that rattled off a post before going in to finalize the 3-0 score line.
