Austin – No. 11 Texas Men's Tennis fell to Baylor, 6-0, on Friday night at the Texas Tennis Center.
The Bears secured the doubles point with wins at No. 3 and No. 2, followed by five singles wins with one match left unfinished at No. 3.
In doubles, the match at No. 3 finished first with sophomore Micah Braswell and junior Chih Chi Huang downed by Adrian Boitan and Tadeas Paroulek, 6-3. The Bears picked up a break in the second game for a 3-0 lead that they maintained to the finish. Baylor then clinched the point at No. 2, as the No. 58 pair of sophomore Eliot Spizzirri and Siem Woldeab dropped their match to Matias Soto and Juampi Mazzuchi, 6-4. With Texas serving first, the Bears broke for a 3-2 lead, which would be the only break of the contest leading to their win. In the remaining match, the No. 23 duo of senior Richard Ciamarra and sophomore Cleeve Harper were leading over No. 30 Sven Lah and Finn Bass, 5-4, in a match that stayed on serve all the way until play stopped.
In singles, Baylor took a 2-0 overall lead with a 6-4, 6-2 win by Bass over No. 47 Ciamarra at No. 4. Ciamarra had an early break chance on a deuce point, but Bass held and broke in the next game for a 3-1 lead that he extended to 4-1 on serve. However, Ciamarra fought back to win three of the next four games, but the set was decided on another deuce point for Bass on serve. In the second, Ciamarra took the first game on serve, but Bass put together a 5-0 run on his way to the final.
The match at No. 2 finished next with freshman No. 19 Pierre-Yves Bailly downed by No. 50 Soto, 6-1, 6-3. Soto won nine of the first 10 games, including taking the first set on a deuce point, to establish a 3-0 lead in the second. Bailly came within a deuce point of pulling even in the set, but Soto claimed it for a 4-2 lead en route to the win and a 3-0 lead for Baylor.
The Bears then clinched at No. 1 with a 6-1, 6-4 win by No. 15 Boitan over No. 24 Braswell. Boitan opened with a 5-0 run in the first and used another 5-0 run in the second to lead 5-1 in that set. Braswell rallied for a 3-0 run of his own to get within 5-4, but Boitan closed on serve in the next game.
The lead moved to 5-0 after No. 85 Woldeab fell to Paroulek, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5. Woldeab began on serve and took a 2-0 lead with an early break, but Paroulek went on a 5-0 run that included three deuce points. The players then held in the last two games of the set. The second stayed on serve up to a 4-3 lead for Paroulek when he collected the set's only break on a deuce point and then closed on serve.
The unfinished match was the next to end with No. 66 Spizzirri even with No. 30 Lah, 6-3, 4-6, 1-1 at No. 3. In the first set, it was Spizzirri who earned the only break, using it for a 5-3 lead that he turned into a 6-3 win on serve. Lah took the first break of the second set for a 3-1 advantage, but Spizzirri answered it in the next game to get it back on serve and evened it at 3-3 after that. He then had an opportunity for a deuce point break for the lead, but Lah was able to hold, as did Spizzirri, for 4-4. After Lah held again, he broke for the set and the players both held serve in the third before the match was called.
At that time, the match at No. 6 between Harper and Mazzuchi was finishing its second set with Harper winning the first, 6-4, and Mazzuchi taking the second by the same score. Harper had been down 3-1 in the first before setting out on a 5-0 run that he capped with a deuce point break before the players both held in the last two games. In the second, Mazzuchi broke in the first game, but Harper broke back and held for 2-1. He forced a deuce point in the next game, but Mazzuchi was able to hold then broke for a 3-2 lead. The rest of the set stayed on serve from there to go to a third-set superbreaker. That frame began back and forth, but with a 4-3 lead, Mazzuchi won six of the final seven points for the 10-4 final.
The Longhorns (11-8, 0-1 Big 12) next close their home regular season schedule with a doubleheader on Sunday, first against No. 40 Texas Tech at noon, followed by UTRGV at 4:30 p.m. CT at the Texas Tennis Center.
