No. 12 Men’s Golf in the lead after second round at Western Intercollegiate

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — Despite battling windy conditions for the second straight day, the No. 12 Texas Men's Golf team fired a 6-over-par 356 on Tuesday afternoon to grab a four-stroke lead in the team standings following the second round of the Western Intercollegiate at Pasatiempo Golf Club. Junior Mason Nome paced the Longhorns with a career-best 4-under-par 66 on Tuesday and moved into seventh place on the individual leaderboard.
The Western Intercollegiate uses a six-player lineup for each team, with the best five scores counting for the team score. Texas has registered a 36-hole team score of 27-over-par 727 (371-356), four strokes in front of No. 5 Pepperdine at 31-over-par 731 (370-361). San Diego State is third at 44-over-par 744 (379-365). Two members of No. 6 Washington's final group will finish their second round on Wednesday morning, before third-round split tee times begin at 9:30 a.m. Central (7:30 a.m. Pacific).
The 14-team field at the Western Intercollegiate includes four squads that are ranked in the Top 25 of the latest Division I Bushnell Golfweek Coaches poll (April 1).
Texas has four players among the top 11 in the individual standings entering the final round. Senior Pierceson Coody is tied for second with a 36-hole total of 2-over-par 142 (70-72), just three strokes behind Colorado State's Rasmus Hjelm at 1-under-par 139 (70-69). Senior Cole Hammer is tied for fourth at 3-over-par 143 (73-70), and Nome is seventh at 4-over-par 144 (78-66). Junior Travis Vick is tied for 11th at 6-over-par 146 (73-73).
The Western Intercollegiate concludes with 18 holes on Wednesday, April 13. Texas will be paired with Pepperdine, San Diego State and Washington for Wednesday's final round, and tee times will begin at 10:54 a.m. Central (8:54 a.m. Pacific) off the first hole. Golf Channel will provide live national coverage of Wednesday's final round from 3-6 p.m. Central (1-4 p.m. Pacific).
The Lineup
- Junior Mason Nome carded a career-best 4-under-par 66 (previous best was 68) in Tuesday's second round. Nome's 66 is three strokes better than the next best individual round (69) through the first 36 holes of the tournament. Nome, who improved 43 spots in the individual standings on Tuesday, registered birdies on holes 4, 7, 9, 10 and 14 to climb to 5-under before a bogey on the par-four 16th hole.
- Senior Cole Hammer posted an even-par 70 on Tuesday and is tied for fourth in the individual standings at 3-over-par 143 (73-70). Hammer tallied three birdies during his second round.
- Senior Pierceson Coody fired a 2-over 72 in the second round and is tied for second in the individual standings at 2-over-par 142 (70-72). Coody recorded four birdies on Tuesday and was at even par though 17 holes before an unfortunate double bogey on 18 while finishing play in near darkness.
- Junior Travis Vick posted a 3-over-par 73 for the second straight day and is tied for 11th at 6-over-par 146 (73-73). Vick registered a pair of birdies on Tuesday.
- Senior Parker Coody carded a 5-over-par 75 and is tied for 38th place at 12-over-par 152 (77-75). Coody recorded a pair of birdies in his second round.
- Freshman Alejandro Gonzalez added a 9-over-par 79 and is tied for 80th place at 21-over-par 161 (82-79). Gonzalez posted four birdies on Tuesday.
