AUSTIN, Texas – The 2022 Texas Football Orange-White Spring Game presented by Living Spaces was held on Saturday evening and provided a look into the progress the football program during the spring. The game differed from the traditional format with a focus made on roughly 100 plays and a red zone competition and no score were kept.
Head coach Steve Sarkisian believes that Saturday's game was a good representation of what the players showed the coaching staff during the spring's 14 practice sessions. It gave the players a chance to make plays and provided points of attention for the team to work on this summer.
"The majority of our team made strides of growth," Sarkisian said. "Clearly we're not a finished product. There's plenty of work to be done, but we're moving in the right direction."
Sarkisian believes the team's improved field intelligence is one of the signs of growth, impacting all aspects of the game and allowing the team to react quicker.
"Football-wise, I think we've raised our IQ on our team. I've really tried to make it a point to get our team to understand situational football," Sarkisian said. "Understanding the situation and anticipating calls (is) how we want to play as a team in those scenarios, I think we really grew in that area."
Development has been occurring on and off the field, as one player recently told Sarkisian that the players are focused on the team and do not want to let each other down, which he notes is a great example of the maturity of the current team.
