A Lexi Missimo brace (two goals) led a contingent of seven different Texas goal scorers in the win
AUSTIN, Texas – On Sunday afternoon at Mike A. Myers Stadium, Texas soccer got goals from seven different players to complete an unbeaten spring campaign with an 8-0 rout of UTSA.
In registering a 5-0 spring record, the Longhorns out-scored their opposition by a commanding total of 24-2 with four shutouts. The only two goals allowed by the UT defense came back on April 7 during an exhibition against Tigres UANL Femenil, a women's professional team that plays in the top flight of Mexican women's pro soccer, Liga BBVA MX Femenil.
Individually over the five-match spring campaign, Missimo led the Longhorns charge with six total goals, while freshman transfer midfielder Jilly Shimkin scored five times. Senior forward Mackenzie McFarland and freshman forward Trinity Byars each registered three goals, junior forward Sydney Nobles and freshman forward Holly Ward both posted two goals and freshman defender EmJ Cox, junior forward Teni Akindoju and freshman midfielder Ashlyn Miller all scored once apiece.
It took just 7:51 for Texas to create the match's first great scoring chance. In the final third, Byars took possession and crossed to Shimkin who had a shot blocked by the UTSA defense. Ward ended up with the ball off the deflection at close range, but her eventual try was saved by the keeper.
After McFarland forced a point-blank stop during the 12th minute, Texas finally found pay dirt at the 16:12 mark. Senior defender Carlee Allen picked up a loose ball in midfield and played it out wide to McFarland. The Coppell, Texas, product played the ball ahead to Byars, and she dribbled past her marker before delivering a final pass to McFarland who scored into the side netting for a 1-0 advantage.
The Longhorns had two more great chances thwarted by the UTSA net minder at 20:00 and 24:10, respectively, as shots from McFarland and senior defender Emma Regan were struck straight at the keeper.
Texas finally doubled its lead in the 26th minute after Missimo took possession at the top of the 18-yard box. The Southlake, Texas, native worked to create space, turned and launched a 20-yard blast into the corner to make it 2-0.
UTSA nearly pulled one back, after a turnover near midfield at the 29:25 mark, but fifth-year senior goalkeeper Savannah Madden made a great diving stop to push an eventual shot up-and-over the crossbar.
Shimkin got on the scoresheet during the 33rd minute as a Byars pass got the Rockville Centre, N.Y., native into enough space to allow her the chance to beat the keeper for a 3-0 lead.
Just 1:44 later, Missimo received a pass from freshman forward Tati Fung, dribbled past two UTSA players and fired home a 10-yard left-footed effort to make it 4-0.
The Longhorns soon made it a three-goal outburst over just 4:12 of match time while grabbing a 5-0 advantage. Regan took possession in UT's end and drove a long ball upfield. McFarland out-sprinted the Roadrunner defense to the ball and played a pass across to Nobles who drilled it home from close range on her first touch of the match.
The onslaught continued quickly out of the halftime break as Byars scored off a half-volley from a Missimo pass at the 48:56 mark.
With 31:50 left in regulation, Shimkin tracked a UTSA player over 40 yards, forced a turnover and then launched a long ball over the top of the defense. The pass dropped right to Ward who ran past her marker and drove a deflected shot into the twine to make it 7-0.
After Texas freshman defender Lauren Lapomarda did great work to keep a ball in play, she fed Fung, who swung it out wide to senior defender Cameron Brooks. The Round Rock, Texas, native eventually played a pass through to Ward who carried the ball deep into the 18. The Canadian international eventually slotted it back to Miller who rattled a shot off the underside of the crossbar and into the net to finalize an 8-0 victory.
