No. 6 Men’s Golf in fifth after opening round at NCAA Norman Regional

NORMAN, Okla. — The No. 6 Texas Men's Golf team carded a 6-under-par 282 on Monday to rest in fifth place in the team standings following the opening round of the NCAA Norman Regional at Jimmie Austin Golf Club. Junior Travis Vick paced the Longhorns with a 5-under-par 67 and is tied for third in the individual standings.
The NCAA Norman Regional features 13 teams and 10 individual players. The low five teams and the low individual not on those five qualifying teams will advance to the NCAA Championship, scheduled for May 27-June 1 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.
Regional host and No. 1 Oklahoma holds the team lead after the first 18 holes at 11-under-par 277, while South Carolina is second at 10-under-par 278. Auburn and Utah are tied for third at 8-under-par 280, and Texas is fifth at 282. The Longhorns have a five-stroke cushion over Ole Miss in sixth place at 1-under-par 287.
J.M. Butler of Auburn and South Carolina's Gene Zeigler share the 18-hole individual lead at 6-under-par 66. Vick and Oklahoma's Drew Goodman are tied for third at 5-under-par 67, just one stroke behind the leaders. Senior Cole Hammer is tied for 18th at 1-under-par 71, and senior Parker Coody and junior Mason Nome are both tied for 23rd at even-par 72.
The NCAA Norman Regional continues with 18 holes on Tuesday, May 17 and concludes with 18 holes on Wednesday, May 18. Texas will be paired with Utah and Ole Miss for Tuesday's second round, and tee times will begin at 8:30 a.m. Central off the 10th tee.
The Lineup
- Junior Travis Vick tied his season-low round with a 5-under-par 67 and is tied for third in the individual standings. After a bogey on his second hole, Vick carded birdies on 3, 5, 7, 8 and 9 to make the turn at 4-under. He added a birdie on 11 and closed out his round with seven consecutive pars.
- Senior Cole Hammer recorded a 1-under-par 71 and is tied for 18th. Hammer birdied the first two holes of his round and made the turn at 2-under. He made bogey at 11 and 15 but answered with a birdie on 16.
- Senior Parker Coody fired an even-par 72 and is tied for 23rd. After playing his opening 11 holes at 2-over, he registered birdies on 12, 16 and 18 and a bogey on 17 to get back to even-par on the day.
- Junior Mason Nome carded an even-par 72 and is tied for 23rd. After playing his opening 13 holes at 3-over, Nome recorded a birdie on 14 (par-4) and closed his round with an eagle on the par-five 18th hole.
- Senior Pierceson Coody posted a 1-over-par 73 and is tied for 30th. He registered three birdies in his opening round.
