The Details
After Baylor left a pair stranded in the top of the first, the Longhorns wasted no time jumping to an early lead in the bottom half. As they've done all season long, Jefferson and freshman third baseman Mia Scott kick-started the offense by registering consecutive singles to start the inning. With the speedy duo in scoring position following a sac bunt, Iakopo hit a blooper to center that ricocheted off the glove of diving Baylor center fielder McKenzie Wilson for a RBI double. Washington followed immediately by launching a two-run double to left center to boost UT's advantage to 3-0.
The Bears managed another base runner in the top of the third as Wilson singled to right with one out. She eventually took off trying to steal second, but was thrown out by Iakopo to end the frame.
Texas quickly loaded the bases to begin its half of the third on Scott and McKenzie Parker walks and a sharp Iakopo lined single to third. Sophomore right fielder Courtney Day stepped into the box and chopped a ball to first. Baylor tried to retire the runner at the plate, but a throw home proved high for an error as Scott scored unearned to make it 4-0. Dayton later stepped in with two outs and chopped a RBI single just over the second base bag to expand the Longhorns lead to 5-0.
With Dolcini keeping the Bears bats under wraps, the Burnt Orange & White eventually made it 6-0 on an Iakopo sac fly in the bottom of the fourth.
Gifted a six-run advantage, Dolcini made it hold up the rest of the way as the Ferndale, Calif., native retired the last nine batters batters she faced in completing a three-hit shutout.
