Track & Field wins five events on opening day of Cardinal Classic

LOUSIVILLE, KY. - Texas track and field earned five event wins on the first day of the Cardinal Classic in its first meet of 2023.
The first win of the day came from sophomore Cole Lindhorst in the men's mile, narrowly missing out on a sub-four minute mile. Lindhorst held off Matthew Hoak from Cincinnati with his time of 4:04.19 to lead the Longhorns. Edwin Gomez made his Longhorns debut and finished sixth with a time of 4:11.90, while freshman Logan Patete finished seventh at 4:13.83.
Nine-time All-American Jonathan Jones later won his first race of the season in the men's 400m with a facility record time of 46.25. Jones now holds 10 of the 20 fastest times in Texas history with Friday's time ranking at No. 18. Freshman Christopher Brinkley Jr., finished third at 47.72, Caleb Hulbin finished fifth at 47.80 and Yusuf Bizimana in ninth at 49.12.
Ezinna Abba made her Longhorn debut in stunning fashion winning the 60m dash in 7.28 after posting the fastest prelims time earlier in the day at 7.34. 400m All-American Kennedy Simon finished third with a time of 7.50 and Kailei Collins just behind in fourth with her time of 7.57.
Texas made it a clean 60m sweep after Marcellus Moore took the men's top spot with his time of 6.63, setting another facility record. Nolton Shelvin was the runner-up with a time of 6.69, while Daniel Garland finished third at 6.75 and Brian Herron crossed at 6.99 in fourth.
Sophomore Stacy Brown almost joined the 8-meter club on his third attempt that flew him into first-place with a jump of 7.99m (26-2.75) in the long jump. Brown won the meet on that attempt and moved up to No. 4 on the Texas All-Time performer list.
Freshman Jeremiah Nubbe broke into the weight throw top-10 performers list in his debut for Texas with a throw of 20.38m (66-10.5). The mark ranks as the No. 3 performer behind Alan Zapalac and Dylan Armstrong. His throw also gave him a second-place finish in his first-ever weight throw competition.
Texas returns to competition on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. (ET).
