Former Longhorn earns his fifth PGA TOUR victory and reclaims his spot as the No. 1 player in the world.
PHOENIX — Former University of Texas star Scottie Scheffler posted a final-round 6-under-par 65 on Sunday to post a two-stroke victory at the WM Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale. With the win, Scheffler will retake the top spot in the Official World Golf Ranking from Rory McIlroy.
Scheffler registered a 72-hole score of 19-under-par 265 (68-64-68-65) to beat Nick Taylor (17-under-par 267) by two strokes on the Stadium Course. Scheffler won the WM Phoenix Open for the second-straight year.
Last year in Phoenix, Scheffler beat Patrick Cantlay in a playoff to claim his first PGA TOUR title. He then captured victories in the Arnold Palmer Invitational, the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play and the Masters Tournament en route to earning PGA TOUR Player of the Year accolades.
In Sunday's final round, Scheffler drained a 22-foot eagle putt on the par-five 13th hole to break a tie with Taylor. Scheffler took a two-shot lead on the par-three 16th hole, when he made a 15-foot par putt. He birdied the par-four 17th hole with a five-foot putt to increase his lead to three strokes before closing with a par on the 18th hole.
Scheffler is one of 17 different former Longhorns to claim a win on the PGA TOUR. Those 17 individuals have now combined to capture 97 all-time PGA TOUR victories.
