No. 9/13 Softball’s White earns 600th career win

Texas softball head coach Mike White earns career milestone as Longhorns beat Loyola, Omaha
AUSTIN, TX – Entering Friday's slate of softball games needing just two more wins to reach his latest career milestone, Texas softball head coach Mike White picked up career wins No. 599 and 600 when the Longhorns knocked off Loyola Chicago, 11-4, and Omaha, 7-6.
While White has earned a 600-168-3 (.778) career record following Friday's action, the fifth-year Longhorn head coach has earned 165 of those wins since moving to the Forty Acres.

"Well, the day started cold and only got colder. But no, I thought our bats did a pretty good job, but, unfortunately, we gave up a few too many runs. The bottom line, though, is that we came out with wins in both games today and that's important. A few of our pitchers struggled a little bit at times today, but that's why we are here and that's why we are playing this time of the year."

"During (the home run) at bat (against Omaha), I noticed I was a little late, because (Sydney Nuismer) was speeding me up so as the at bat went on, I recognized what I was doing. When I had two strikes, I wanted to look out in front and expand my (strike) zone a little bit, so, on that one, I got my load up earlier and kind of just went with what I saw."
GAME NOTES
- During the bottom of the sixth inning of Texas' seven-run win over Loyola, sophomore utility student-athlete Vanessa Quiroga was credited with her first career collegiate home run when she sent a 2-1 pitch off the centerfield videoboard.
- Additionally in the Longhorns' victory over the Ramblers, freshman Leighann Goode became the first Texas softball freshman to be credited with a 4-for-4 performance at the plate since Mia Scott accomplished the feat against UCLA in the Women's College World Series on Thursday, June 2, 2022.
- Goode was on the verge of her fifth plate appearance in the game, too, but was left on deck as the bottom of the sixth inning concluded.
- Since allowing four earned runs to then-No. 8 Northwestern on Friday, Feb. 10, 2023, freshman right-handed pitcher Citlaly Gutierrez has gone on to throw 6.1 consecutive scoreless innings following her two appearances Friday night.
- Alyssa Washington's two-run home run against Omaha to cap Friday's action was the first home run for the Longhorns' junior shortstop since she hit a solo shot at Texas Tech on April 30, 2022.
- Speaking of Washington, her four RBI against the Mavericks were the most by the Abilene native drove in a career-high six runs against Miami (OH) on March 6, 2022.
- Both true freshmen Leighann Goode and Viviana Martinez finished Friday's having been credited with five hits in seven plate appearances for a .714 batting average.
- Mia Scott, who pushed Texas ahead of Omaha in the bottom of the sixth inning, also recorded five hits, but did so in eight official at bats for a .625 batting average.
- Additionally, Courtney Day (.600), Alyssa Popelka (.500) and Vanessa Quiroga (.500) all finished the day with a batting average of .500-or-higher.
UP NEXT
- Texas (5-1-1) will turn around to play Omaha and Loyola, again, on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 3 PM CT and 5:30 PM, respectively.
