No. 9/13 Softball caps Texas Classic with five-inning gem from Morgan

First-year Longhorn Mac Morgan tosses first complete game shutout as Texas beats UIW in five innings
AUSTIN, TX – Texas softball head coach Mike White knew the type of pitcher Mac Morgan was before she arrived on the Forty Arces. And, during Texas' 8-0 win over UIW in five innings, everyone in attendance at McCombs Field knew, too.
After throwing 103 pitches in 6.1 innings against Omaha on Friday, Feb. 17, Morgan (3-0) threw 52 less pitches on Sunday afternoon as the Arizona State transfer threw five innings of one-hit softball en route to earning her second win on her home diamond this season.
Throughout those five innings of work, Morgan struck out four — two shy of tying her season high set against the Mavericks two days prior — and did not issue a walk, marking her third pitching appearance this season without issuing a free pass. She allowed only two baserunners in the hour-and-a-half long game: UIW's Villarreal Giselle led off the game by reaching first via a fielding error and then Giselle hit a two-out double against a draw-in outfield during the top of the third inning. No other Cardinal student-athlete reached base against the Creighton, Mo., native.
FROM HEAD COACH MIKE WHITE
"Well, I think Mac (Morgan) was able to keep her pitch count down — I think it was like 51 pitches — so she just did a great job of working ahead. Besides the one error we had, I thought our defense played really well behind her and that's what we have to do. For us to be successful with Mac in the circle, we have to be able to play good defense."
