No. 6/2 Track and Field completes day one of USF Invitational

Jathan Belaire secures lone event win in the men’s long jump.
TAMPA, Fla. – The No. 6/2 Texas track and field program closed out the first day of the USF Invitational with one event win and five runner-up performances.
Jeremiah Nubbe began Friday's competition with a personal-best throw of 65.03m (213-4) on his sixth throw of the competition. The freshman climbed from No. 4 to No. 2 on the UT All-Time performer list in just his second collegiate outdoor meet. He sits behind Dylan Armstrong who set the record in 2001 with a throw of 227-11 and holds the top-six throws in Texas history.
Senior Jathan Belaire needed his first jump to claim the men's long jump victory with a leap of 7.48m (24-6.5). Junior Michelle Graham was a quarter of an inch off from first place in the women's long jump, finishing as the runner-up with her jump of 6.06m (19-10.75). Graham has jumped 6.06m in back-to-back meets to open the outdoor campaign.
Sticking with the field events, Kaeli Thompson finished third in the pole vault clearing 4.00m (13-1.5). On the men's side, freshman Gavin Hecke finished fifth with a clearance of 5.00m (16-4.75), matching is outdoor personal-best.
Chrystal Herpin and Kiana Lowery finished second and third in the shot put to close out the field events. Herpin continued her momentum from the Longhorn Invitational, setting back-to-back personal bests with her throw of 16.11m (52-10.25) and improved her No. 8 UT All-Time performer mark. Lowery finished just off her personal best with a throw of 15.27m (50-1.25).
The women's 800m was the first track event for the Longhorns. Sophomore Amity Ebarb set a personal best time at 2:09.27 to finish fourth, while freshman Katarzyna Kwiatkowski closed in at 2:20.24. Camron Herron was the runner-up on the men's side shedding more than a second off his personal best to 1:48.26. Cruz Gomez (1:52.20) and Logan Patete (1:52.66) finished eighth and ninth, respectively.
Freshman Dejanea Oakley made her Texas debut in the 200 finishing in second with her time of 23.32, while Emelia Chatfield crossed the finish line in eighth with her time of 23.89. The men were led by Nolton Shelvin who also finished second with his time of 20.71w. Daniel Garland was sixth with his time of 21.07w and Caleb Hulbin finished in 21.28w.
Freshmen Elizabeth Pickett and Brighton Mooney closed out the competition in the women's 5000m run. Pickett made her outdoor debut with a fifth-place finish at 17:25.11, while Mooney finished in seventh in her first collegiate 5K with a time of 17:51.33.
Competition will continue Saturday morning with the men's high jump, discus and women's triple jump at 11 a.m. ET.
