MINNEAPOLIS – Texas broke its own American record in the 800-yard freestyle relay to highlight night one of the 2023 NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships on Wednesday at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatics Center. The relay team of Luke Hobson, Coby Carrozza, Peter Larson and Carson Foster combined for an 800 free relay time of 6:03.42 to give the Longhorns new American, NCAA, meet, pool and program records in the event for the second consecutive NCAA Championships.
The Longhorns registered 50 points during the first finals session of the meet and are in sixth place. Arizona State leads with 68 points, followed by NC State (66) and California (62), while Florida (60) and Indiana (58) round out the top five.

Hobson opened the relay with a 1:29.63 split, the second-fastest 200-yard free time in program history and the fourth-fastest all time. Carrozza built upon the lead with a 1:30.50 split and Larson followed with a 1:33.14. Foster closed out the race in 1:30.15 to break the record by 0.47 seconds and secure the win by 1.66 seconds over runner-up Arizona State.
The victory marked the fourth consecutive 800 free relay title for the Longhorns and occurred on the 35th anniversary of Texas' first title in 1988. All told, the Longhorns have won the 800-yard freestyle relay national crown 17 times. It is the third-straight national title in the event for Foster and second in a row for Hobson and Carrozza. The Longhorns have placed in the top-three at the last seven national meets with five victories.
Texas opened the NCAA Championships with a 12th-place finish in the 200 medley relay from the quartet of Foster, Will Chan, Caspar Corbeau and Daniel Krueger with a season-best time of 1:22.94. The time shaved 0.59 off Texas previous season-best and is the seventh-fastest event swim in program history.
The Longhorns continue competition at the NCAA Championships on Thursday, March 23 through Saturday, March 25 at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatics Center. Thursday will feature the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard individual medley, 50-yard freestyle, 1-meter springboard diving and 200-yard freestyle relay.
