Maurer breaks American record, Kós sets program record twice as the Longhorns take day two lead.
ATLANTA– Texas Men's Swimming and Diving leads with 215.5 points through two days of competition at the NCAA Championships, ahead of Florida (205) and Arizona State (133.5) at McAuley Aquatic Center. The Longhorns were propelled by Rex Maurer's American record-breaking 400-yard individual medley title defense, a program record in the 200-yard freestyle relay and a sweep of the 2-3 spots in the 100-yard breaststroke final. Hubert Kós also broke his own program record in the 100-yard butterfly final to finish second.
Texas set the tone early in prelims by breaking two program records. Kós was part of both record-breaking performances, touching first in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 42.97 to shatter a nine-year-old program record and secure a spot in the finals. Joseph Schooling set the previous record at the 2017 NCAA Championships with a time of 43.75.
In the final event of prelims, Rafael Fente-Damers, Garrett Gould, Kyle Peck and Hubert Kos combined to set a program record in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:14.40, breaking the previous mark of 1:14.41 set by Drew Kibbler, Daniel Krueger, Caspar Corbeau and Cameron Auchinachie at the 2022 NCAA Championships. The quartet went on to finish fourth overall, tied with Tennessee, to earn All-America honors.
Kós picked up right where he left off in the 100-yard butterfly final, breaking his own program record with a time of 42.54 to finish second. Kós was just 0.05 seconds behind Florida's Josh Liendo, who set an NCAA record with a time of 42.49.
Maurer defended his 400-yard individual medley title to give Texas its second individual championship of the meet, breaking a nine-year-old American record in the process. Maurer touched the wall in 3:32.96, surpassing the previous American record of 3:33.42 set by Chase Kalisz and breaking Carson Foster's program record of 3:33.79 set in 2022. Baylor Nelson claimed the runner-up spot with a time of 3:35.28, finishing more than two seconds behind Maurer. Cooper Lucas added to Texas's haul, earning All-America honors with a sixth-place finish in 3:36.87.
Texas posted a 2-3 finish in the 100-yard breaststroke final as Campbell McKean touched second in 50.25 and Nate Germonprez followed in third at 50.38. Will Modglin rounded out the Longhorns' scoring in the event, earning All-America honors with an eighth-place finish in 51.01.
