In the Diving Well
Texas qualified three divers during the three-day NCAA Zone D Diving Championships in Minneapolis two weeks ago. Noah Duperre, the Big 12 champion on platform and 2023 Big 12 Championship Diver of the Meet, qualified on all three disciplines – 1-meter, 3-meter and platform. Nick Harris, Big 12 3-meter champion, is qualified on 1-meter and 3-meter, as is Brendan McCourt. All told, the Longhorns will have fthreeNCAA Championship competitors on 1-meter and 3-meter and one on platform.
National Team
A total of eight current and former Longhorns were selected to the 2022-23 USA Swimming National Team. Chosen by their ranking among the six fastest swimmers in their respective event(s) from the past calendar year, the list of current Longhorns includes Alec Enyeart (1500 free), Carson Foster (200 free, 200 back, 200 fly, 200 IM, 400 IM), Jake Foster (200 breast, 400 IM), Luke Hobson (200 free) and David Johnston (800 free, 1500 free). The list of Texas Exes is made up of Drew Kibler (100 free, 200 free), Will Licon (300 breast) and Sam Stewart (200 IM). Additionally, Caspar Corbeau competes as a member of the Dutch national team.
FINA Short Course World Championships
Carson Foster collected five medals and helped the United States take down the 4x200m freestyle relay world record at the 2022 FINA Short Course Championships in Melbourne last December. Swimming the second leg in the 4x200m free relay, he helped the United States post a time of 6:44.12, shedding over four seconds off the previous record. Foster won silver in the 200 IM and 400 IM and bronze swimming the third leg of the 4x100m free relay. He was joined in the 400 IM final by his brother Jake Foster, who took sixth with a time of 4:02.51.
The Fosters also collected medals for competing in relay preliminary races, with Carson collecting his fifth medal with a gold in the 4x100m medley relay and Jake receiving a gold in the 4x200m free relay.
David Johnston advanced to two championship finals for the United States, taking fifth in the 800m freestyle with a time of 7:34.33 on Saturday and eighth in Tuesday's 1500m free final in 14:35.27.
Caspar Corbeau competed for The Netherlands, advancing to the 100m breaststroke semifinals and placing sixth in his heat in 57.73, while clocking the 11th-fastest time in the 200m breaststroke preliminary heats at 2:05.14.
Diving honored with 2020 USA Diving Collegiate Impact Award
Texas Diving was honored last December with the 2020 USA Diving Collegiate Impact Award, presented to the top-contributing school on the 2020 U.S. Olympic Diving Team in Tokyo. The Longhorns were recognized during the Team USA Collegiate Recognition Awards that ran in conjunction with the National Football Foundation's 64th Annual Awards celebration in December.
At the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020, 100% of the U.S. Olympic Diving Team competed collegiately. Texas had three divers competing in the Games, the largest representation of any program on Team USA in Tokyo, which earned the Longhorns the 2020 USA Diving Collegiate Impact Award.
2022 USA Diving Winter Nationals
Nick Harris earned a pair of medals, winning the national title on the 1-meter springboard and earning a bronze in the synchronized 3-meter with partner Max Fowler.
On the 1-meter, Harris scored 699 points to top runner-up Jack Ryan by 2.6 points. He tallied at least 58.5 points on five of his six dives in the final round, highlighted by a 69.75-point inward 2 1/2 somersault tuck on his second-round dive.
Harris and diving partner Max Fowler scored 650.25 points to earn the third-place result. In sixth place following the third round of the final, Harris and Fowler scored 63.24 points on an inward 3 1/2 somersault tuck to move into third. They closed out the competition with a pair of 60-plus point dives to clinch the bronze.
Texas Divers won the women's team title with 130 points and earned a third-place finish on the men's side with 66 points. Collectively, Texas divers scored a combined 196 points to win the overall team competition.
Big 12 Championship Honors
Following standout performances at the Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships, the Longhorns swept all four individual meet honors. Carson Foster earned Swimmer of the Meet honors for the second-straight year and Noah Duperre was tabbed Diver of the Meet for the first time in his career. Will Chan was named the Swimming Newcomer of the Meet and Nick Harris garnered Diving Newcomer of the Meet accolades.
Team Rankings
The Longhorns are ranked fifth in the latest College Swimming & Diving Coaches Association (CSCAA) Division I poll (March 9). The top 10 includes Arizona State (448), California (424), Florida (421), NC State (391), TEXAS (375), Indiana (368), Tennessee (340), Auburn (323), Stanford (302) and Ohio State (285).
Storied Program
Texas placed second at the 2022 NCAA Championships and has claimed 15 NCAA Championships, finished runner-up 13 times and has a total of 35 top-3 finishes at the NCAA Championship meet. UT earned NCAA team titles in 1981, 1988, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2010, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2021.
Conference Dominance
The Longhorns have won all 26 Big 12 Conference titles and have claimed 44 consecutive crowns. This current streak dates to the 1980 Southwest Conference championship. Texas has earned a total of 65 conference titles (38 Southwest Conference, 27 Big 12 Conference).
Head Coach Eddie Reese
Eddie Reese is in his 46th season at the helm of the Texas program. A three-time U.S. Men's Olympic Team head coach (1992, 2004, 2008), Reese is the winningest coach in the sport's history with 15 NCAA titles. He is the only collegiate swimming coach to win an NCAA team title in five separate decades.
