AUSTIN, TX – Entering the bottom of the seventh in Texas' 3-2 win over Texas Tech, the Longhorns needed one run to tie and two to win. It took only five batters for the home team to accomplish that.
On the third pitch she saw, Katie Cimusz opened the frame with a bloop single to right field. Lou Gilbert checked into the game at first base for Cimusz as a pinch runner. Camille Corona, on the first pitch she saw, laid down a bunt attempt and beat out the throw for an infield single, moving Gilbert to second.
Following a three-pitch strikeout for the inning's first out, Leighann Goode, who tied the game with a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth, recorded her second hit of the game when she sent a 3-2 pitch back to centerfield to plate Gilbert and tie the game.
Then, moments later, Mia Scott, the Longhorns' unanimous preseason All-Big 12 selection, sent a 2-2 pitch into the right-centerfield gap allowing Corona to easily score from second and giving Texas the win.
FROM HEAD COACH MIKE WHITE
"Conference games are always a battle, it doesn't matter who you are playing, where the games are or what their record is. It'll always be a battle. And (Texas Tech) came out and hit that home run during the first inning and it took a while for us to get it back. We were hitting the ball pretty well but started pressing there during the middle innings. Then, when the pressure was on at the end, we came through, especially the top two in the order in Leighann (Goode) and Mia (Scott) and that's what is most important.
FROM SOPHOMORE MIA SCOTT
"I just didn't want to strikeout during that final at bat. I was just looking for a pitch I could do something with."
