No. 7 Women’s Golf captures Big 12 Match Play Championship

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The No. 7 University of Texas women's golf team defeated Kansas 4-1-0 for the first Big 12 women's Match Play Championship on Sunday at Kierland Golf Club.
The Longhorns have won each of their two match play events as they won the Cactus Cup match play tournament. At the Cactus Cup Texas defeated No. 4 South Carolina and No. 6 San Jose State. On their way to the Big 12 Match Play Championship, the Longhorns earned wins over No. 12 Baylor and No. 17 Iowa State.
The Longhorns won five of the eight matches they played on the weekend, including five straight from pool play to the championship bracket semifinal and final.
All six of the Texas golfers earned an individual match win over the three-day event. Bohyun Park posted a 6-1-1 record and Sophie Guo and Bentley Cotton each tallied a record of 5-3-0.
Angela Heo posted a 4-2-0 record. Heo put together a special round in the semifinal against TCU's 2022 Big 12 Freshman of the Year Caitlyn Macnab. Heo started the round with four straight birdies and was nine-under-par through her first 10 holes. Heo had seven birdies and two eagles in a 14-hole stretch.
Against Kansas in the final, the Longhorns had to come from down 3-1-1 in the match. Heo was tied through eight holes in her match. Heo birdied five of her next seven holes to gain control of the match and put a point on the board for Texas.
Cindy Hsu came up big for Texas as she found herself in a tight match tied through six holes. From seven to 12, Hsu made three birdies and an eagle on the par-five 493-yard 10th hole. Hsu took a commanding four up lead and won her match.
Bohyun Park, coming off the Augusta National Women's Amateur last week posted six birdies in the championship match and picked up a win for the Longhorns.
Sophie Guo was tied through 14 holes in her match and won three straight holes to secure a point for the Longhorns.

Up next the Longhorns will see familiar competition as they get ready for the Big 12 Championships, April 21-23 in Dallas, Texas. Last year the Longhorns captured their fourth Big 12 Championship in the last five years with a victory at Houston Oaks.
