No. 12 TF's Neugebauer leads decathlon after day one at NCAA Championships

Neugebauer sets three personal bests on his way to day one decathlon PB at NCAAs.
AUSTIN, Texas – The No. 12 Texas men's track and field program took to Mike A. Myers Stadium for the first day of the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
It was a day of three personal bests for Leo Neugebauer as he finished the first five events with a 21-point lead over Kyle Garland of Georgia.
The five-time All American began his decathlon run setting a new personal best in the 100-meter dash with his time of 10.61 seconds. Neugebauer's time was the fastest in the field of 24. He later finished third in the long jump with an outdoor personal-best jump of 7.68m (25-2.50) and added the second-best throw in the shot put at 16.27m (53-4 1/2). After three events the 2022 NCAA decathlon runner-up sat 13 points out of first place.
Neugebauer and Garland finished tied for first after clearing 2.04m (6-8.25) to add 840 points to each score. The clearance marked a season best for the Texas decathlon program record holder. He finished the fifth and final event of the opening day with a one-second personal best in the 400-meter at 47.08. Neugebauer enters day two with 4,591 points, a first-day personal best.
Crayton Carrozza and Yusuf Bizimana both qualified for the 800-meter final on Friday night. Carrozza finished with the third-fastest qualifying time of 1:47.73, while Bizimana won Heat 2 with a time of 1:48.02. Bizimana is the defending 800m NCAA indoor champion, while Carrozza finished as the runner-up this season.
The Longhorns 4x100-meter relay of Daniel Garland, Nolton Shelvin, Caleb Hulbin and Marcellus Moore ran a season-best time of 38.73 to finish 11th overall. The time is tied for the second-fastest time in Texas history and has been ran three times in program history. The team earned Second Team All-America honors for their effort.
Later on the track, Shelvin finished his individual season in the 100-meter dash with his time of 10.15. The time is tied for the 14th-fastest time in school history. In his first season with the Longhorns, Shelvin became the No. 3 performer in Texas history with his run of 10.13 seconds at the NCAA West Prelims and holds two of the top-15 times in school history.
Freshman Kody Blackwood ended his season reaching the 400-meter hurdles semis and finished 20th with his time of 51.18 to earn Second Team All-America honors. Blackwood ends his first collegiate season as the No. 9 performer in UT history.
Patrick Piperi closed out the field events for the Longhorns with All-America honorable mention finishing shot put in 21st. Piperi finished with a mark of 18.65m (61-2.25) on his final attempt.
The Longhorns of Hulbin, Jonathan Jones, Christopher Brinkley Jr., and Brian Herron closed out the first day of competition running the 4x400-meter relay in 3:01.90. The time is a season-best time and was good for an 11th-place finish and the No. 5 performance in UT history.
