No. 16 Soccer opens Big 12 play with sixth consecutive shutout
09.14.2023 | Soccer
Texas has now outscored its last six opponents, 28-0, during current unbeaten streak
WACO, Texas – It took nearly 55 minutes for the dam to break in Texas' 4-0 win at Baylor Thursday night. And once it broke, the water never stopped flowing for the duration of the 45-minute second half.
Following a scoreless first half that saw Texas outshoot Baylor, 10-2, Lexi Missimo, who entered the match as the nation's leader in total points, added two more by converting her fourth penalty kick opportunity on the season following a Baylor handball in the box less than 10 minutes into the second half.
23 minutes later, Holly Ward gave the Longhorns the first of three insurance goals when she sent a pass from Jilly Shimkin into the back of the net for her first goal on the season. Minutes later, Shimkin was credited with her second assist on the night and seventh of the season when she found the right foot of Missimo, who fired a shot passed the Bear goalkeeper for her second brace of the season.
On her birthday, Avery Clark was credited with her third career assist on the season when she and Ashlyn Miller connected for Miller's second goal on the season with less than five minutes remaining in the second half.
FROM HEAD COACH ANGELA KELLY
"Tonight really just showed me the true definition of the term team. With the adversity we faced over the last few days, we just put our heads down and just asked the next person to step up. And not only did those people step up, but they also stepped up big time. I could not be prouder. When you're in the profession as long as I've been for 27 years, there's lots of memorable moments and tonight is going to be one of those moments."
FROM FRESHMAN FORWARD AVERY CLARK
"We just came together at halftime and just talked through everything. We had all the shots (in the first half), but we were able to come together — especially in the pressing — and work more as a unit and actually be able to hear each other with the band not in our ears anymore. We were able to watch that first goal go into the net and that just led to all the rest."
