No. 11 Men’s Golf places second at Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational

Freshman Daniel Bennett ties for third in the individual standings at 5-under 205 in his collegiate debut.
FORT WORTH, Texas — The No. 11 Texas Men's Golf team posted a 1-over-par 281 on Tuesday to finish in second place at the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational at historic Colonial Country Club. Freshman Daniel Bennett carded a 54-hole total of 5-under 205 (65-69-71) to tie for third on the individual leaderboard in his collegiate debut.
No. 8 Oklahoma claimed the team title with a three-round score of 10-under 830 (276-275-279), while the Longhorns finished four strokes behind the Sooners at 6-under 834 (280-273-281). No. 1 Auburn placed third at 4-under 836 (282-274-280).
The elite 15-team field featured 12 squads in the latest Bushnell/Golfweek Division I Coaches poll (Sept. 20), including three of the top four ranked teams in the nation. Oklahoma, Texas and Auburn were the only three squads among the tournament's 15 teams to finish with under-par totals in the 54-hole event.
During Tuesday's final round, the Longhorns counted scores from junior Christiaan Maas (1-under 69), junior Tommy Morrison (1-under 69), Bennett (1-over 71) and sophomore Jack Gilbert (2-over 72).
North Carolina's David Ford earned individual medalist honors with a 54-hole total of 9-under 201 (69-65-67), while Brendan Valdes of Auburn finished second at 6-under 204 (69-66-69). Bennett placed in a three-way tie for third at 5-under 205 along with Oklahoma's Drew Goodman (66-72-67) and Billy Davis of Auburn (68-67-70). All five Texas players placed inside the top 20 in the final individual standings in the 75-person field.
Texas returns to the course when it competes at the NB3 MatchPlay on Oct. 8-9 (Tuesday-Wednesday) in Santa Ana Pueblo, N.M.
The Lineup
- Freshman Daniel Bennett carded a 1-over 71 on Tuesday and tied for third in the individual standings with a 54-hole total of 5-under 205 (65-69-71) in his collegiate debut. Bennett was 2-over through his opening 12 holes on Tuesday before making a birdie on 13 and five-straight pars to finish at 1-over 71.
- Junior Tommy Morrison posted a 1-under 69 in his final round and tied for 11th with a three-round score of 1-over 211 (74-68-69). He tallied six birdies on Tuesday and has now registered top-11 individual finishes in each of his first three tournament appearances this season.
- Junior Christiaan Maas fired a 1-under 69 on Tuesday and tied for 14th with a 54-hole total of 2-over 212 (73-70-69). Maas made nine-straight pars to open his final round before adding a pair of birdies (holes 10 and 17) against one bogey to finish at 1-under. He has now recorded a top-15 individual finish in each of his first three tournament appearances this season.
- Sophomore Jack Gilbert tallied a 2-over 72 in his final round and tied for 19th with a three-round score of 2-over 213 (73-68-72). He registered four birdies on Tuesday. Gilbert posted a season-best finish, topping his previous best of a tie for 30th at the season-opening Folds of Honor Collegiate.
- Junior Luke Potter carded a 6-over 76 on Tuesday and tied for 19th with a 54-hole total of 2-over 213 (69-68-76).
