Soccer beats Missouri for 12th win, moves into tie for third place in SEC

Lexi Missimo, Jilly Shimkin score goals in final regular season match at Mike A. Myers Stadium
AUSTIN, Texas – The same way they did nine other times throughout the 2024 season, the Texas Longhorn women's soccer senior student-athletes walked off the pitch at Mike A. Myers Stadium as winners after taking down Missouri, 3-1, during the final regular season home match of their collegiate soccer careers.
After spending over 30 of the 45-minute first half trailing Missouri, 1-0, following a Keegan Good goal at the 9:44 mark, Lexi Missimo wasted little time finding the back of the net following the 15-minute halftime break.
With less than 80 seconds having tickets off the clock in the second half, Missimo took a pass from fellow senior Holly Ward and send the ball into the upper-right corner of the goal, sailing away from Missouri goalkeeper Kate Phillips. The goal was the 55th of Missimo's career and pushed her career point total to 170 over 83 career matches.
The goal also set the stage for another senior night moment as Jilly Shimkin, like Missimo, took a pass from Ward and found the back of the net — for the 15th time over her three seasons on the Forty Acres — and pushed Texas ahead, 2-1, with 26 minutes left to play.
Twenty minutes later, the present met the future as senior goalkeeper Mia Justus sent a goal kick sailing through the air that landed in front of freshman forward Amalia Villarreal, who took the outlet pass, turned upfield and beat a defender and Phillips for her seventh career goal.
FROM HEAD COACH ANGELA KELLY
"(The senior class) really stepped up during the second half tonight. They, along with everyone else, played much better after halftime and that was critical to win tonight's contest. I'm really proud of them. Words can't even describe how much they've meant to this program."
MATCH NOTES
- By earning the starting assignment on the defensive backline for Thursday night's match, Lauren Lapomarda became one of just three student-athletes in program history to start 90-or-more matches during their career at Texas.
- With Lapomarda in the Starting XI, Texas is now 57-19-14 (.711) following Thursday's result.
- Texas' win over Missouri on Thursday not only marked the head coach Angela Kelly's first-ever win against the Tigers, but it was also the Longhorns' 60th all-time victory against current members of the SEC.
- UT now has an all-time record of 60-46-13 (.559) against active women's soccer programs in the SEC.
- As a result of her match-tying goal less than 90 seconds into the second half, Texas is now 32-2-2 when Lexi Missimo scores at least one goal in a match.
- Thursday night's action marked the first time Texas has ever scored multiple second-half goals during a SEC match.
- By earning the win between the pipes on Thursday night, Texas senior goalkeeper Mia Justus now has 12 wins on the season, which is tied for the eighth-most wins in a single season by a Longhorn goalkeeper.
- The win, which was Justus' 29th during her two seasons on the Forty Acres, moves the Ohio native just one win shy of tying for fifth on the program's career wins list.
UP NEXT
- Texas (12-3-2, 5-3-1) will close out the 2024 regular season on Sunday, Oct. 27, when the Longhorns travel to Athens, Ga., to take on Georgia (7-4-6, 3-2-4) at 3 p.m. CT / 4 p.m. ET on SEC Network+.
