No. 3/3 Softball’s comeback falls short at No. 2/2 LSU

Despite out-hitting the Tigers, Longhorns can’t find timely hit in come-from-behind effort
BATON ROUGE, La. – Seven of the nine Longhorn batters were credited with a hit — with two finishing with multi-hit performances —but it wasn't enough for No. 3/3 Texas during Tuesday's 7-4 loss at No. 2/2 LSU.
After LSU plated five first-inning runs followed by a single run in the second to take an 6-0 lead into the top of the third, Texas more than doubled its hit total through the first two innings (2) with a five-hit third inning that ultimately saw three different Longhorn softball student-athletes touch home plate to cut the deficit in half with Mia Scott's two-run single being the big blow.
An inning later, Scott, again, found a way to drive in a run — her third on the day — as she brought home Viviana Martinez, who led off the inning by sending a 2-2 pitch back up the middle for a single then advanced to second on a Bella Dayton four-pitch walk, to make it a two-run game.
However, the Tigers answered back with a single run just four pitches in the bottom half of the fourth after a leadoff triple setup a sacrifice fly to make it a 7-4 contest.
From there, Estelle Czech, Mac Morgan and LSU's Sydney Berzon combined to allow just one base runner — a two-out single in the bottom of the fourth — over the game's next 18 batters.
FROM HEAD COACH MIKE WHITE
"You can't practice this kind of adversity. You can say you're down by a bunch of runs and what are we going to do, but until you're down there and in an environment like this — a packed house, a lot of noise — so for us to be able to chill it a little bit and get quality at bats and score runs, it bodes well. Now we just have to build on that and play the game the right way from the very first pitch."
GAME NOTES
- With her two run-scoring base hits against the Tigers, Mia Scott was credited with her ninth multi-hit game — eight two-hit — on the season, which is now the second most by a Longhorn softball student-athlete at this point of the 2024 season.
- Kayden Henry entered Tuesday morning's game with a team-leading 12 multi-hit games this season and moved that mark to 13 following a two-hit performance against. LSU.
- Mac Morgan worked the game's final two innings in a relief pitching appearance that followed a 3.1-inning relief appearance from Estelle Czech, who allowed just four hits during her time in the circle.
- The appearance marked the first for Morgan in which she retired every batter she faced since setting down all three batters in one-inning of work against Houston Christian on Wednesday, Feb. 21.
- After losing her spot as the national leader in runs batted in (RBI) after Nevada's Taryn Jenkins moved ahead with 41, Reese Atwood tied Jenkins' mark on a sacrifice fly that scored Henry from third.
- With the play, Atwood is now tied for second on the program's single-season sacrifice fly list with five.
- Mary Iakopo (2022), Alyssa Washington (2022) and Taylor Ellsworth (2017) are all tied for the program's single-season record with six.
- With the play, Atwood is now tied for second on the program's single-season sacrifice fly list with five.
- Tuesday's performance at the dish marked the first multi-RBI game for Scott since driving in a pair of runners in Texas' win over Penn State on Monday, March 4 that capped a three-game stretch of multiple RBIs for the junior.
UP NEXT
- After a four-game road trip to Houston and Baton Rouge, Texas (21-3) will return to the Forty Acres for a three-game Big 12 Conference series against BYU (16-6, 1-2) that begins at 6 p.m. on Thursday, March and runs through Saturday, March 16.
