Texas Swim & Dive is tied for fifth place following the first day of competition at the national meet.
INDIANAPOLIS – Texas Men's Swimming & Diving's Luke Hobson set the 200 free American record with a swim of 1:29.13 on the opening night of competition at the NCAA Championships on Wednesday inside the Indiana University Natatorium.
The Longhorns are tied for fifth place following the first day of the four-day meet after collecting a pair of top-nine relay results. UT has registered 50 points, equaling that of NC State. California and Florida are tied for the lead with 70 points and Arizona State is third with 68 points, while Indiana has scored 52 points to sit in fourth.
Texas won bronze in the 800 free relay, as the quartet of Hobson, Coby Carrozza, Nate Germonprez and Camden Taylor posted a combined swim of 6:05.33 to win the second of three timed finals, with California and Arizona registering the top-two overall swims in the third final.
Hobson kicked off the race with a blistering 1:29.13, breaking Harvard's Dean Farris' record of 1:29.15 set five years ago to the day at the 2019 NCAA Championships in Austin. Carrozza followed with a split of 1:31.32 before giving way to Germonprez, who clocked 1:32.05, and Taylor closed out the race in 1:32.83.
Texas opened the NCAA Championships with a ninth-place finish in the 200 medley relay from the quartet of Will Modglin, Jake Foster, Germonprez and Hobson combining for a time of 1:22.61, the seventh-fastest event swim in program history.
The Longhorns continue competition at the NCAA Championships on Thursday, March 28 through Saturday, March 30 at the IU Natatorium. Thursday will feature the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard individual medley, 50-yard freestyle, 1-meter springboard diving and 200-yard freestyle relay.
