Oklahoma State plates one in the first, adds in the third and fifth while Texas was unable to rally
STILLWATER, Okla. – Texas freshman right-handed pitcher Teagan Kavan made light work of the first two Oklahoma State batters — retiring them on a combined five pitches — but her ninth pitch on the evening resulted in the first of three solo home runs for the Cowgirls as OSU went on to beat Texas, 5-0, Thursday night.
Karli Godwin's two-out, solo home run in the bottom of the first broke a 0-0 tie to give Oklahoma State a one-run advantage on the scoreboard. Texas was in prime position to tie the game — even potentially take the lead — two innings later after Viviana Martinez and Ashton Maloney led off the top of the third with back-to-back singles. Despite a Bella Dayton ground out advancing both Martinez and Maloney into scoring position, back-to-back strikeouts ended the Longhorn scoring opportunity.
With the game's momentum in its dugout, Oklahoma State came out and added three runs to its lead with a four-hit bottom of the third that was highlighted by a Tallen Edwards one-out, solo home run.
Texas, again, had a batter reach in both the fourth — Joley Mitchell leadoff single — and fifth — Maloney one-out single — but neither found a way to touch home plate before the Cowgirls added a fifth run on the night via a Micaela Wark two-out, solo home run in the bottom of the fifth.
The top of the sixth provided another scoring opportunity for Texas after Mitchell and Reese Atwood reached base courtesy of back-to-back, one-out singles. But a fielder's choice and a fly out to center field ended the frame before either could score.
Martinez attempted to spark a seventh-inning rally for the Longhorns by reaching first base with a single through the left side of the diamond to cap an eight-pitch at bat, but the three ensuring batters were all retired on a combined 10 pitches.
