No. 17 Men’s Golf concludes opening round at Western Intercollegiate

Petronzio fires a 3-under-par 67 on Monday and is tied for second in the individual standings.
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. — The No. 17 Texas Men's Golf team carded a 13-over-par 363 on Monday to rest in 10th place after the opening round of the Western Intercollegiate at Pasatiempo Golf Club. Senior Nathan Petronzio posted a 3-under-par 67 in Monday's round and is tied for second in the individual standings, just one stroke off the lead.
The Western Intercollegiate uses a play-six, count-five scoring system. No. 9 Arizona holds the team lead after the first 18 holes at 2-under-par 348. Stanford is second at 4-over-par 354, and No. 8 Washington is third at 5-over-par 355. The 14-team field features five squads in the Top 25 of the national rankings provided by Scoreboard powered by Clippd.
Taehoon Song of Washington holds the 18-hole individual lead at 4-under-par 66. Petronzio is part of a three-way tie for second place that also includes Petr Hruby of Washington and Arizona's Sam Sommerhauser. Only 15 individuals in the 96-player field recorded under-par rounds on Monday.
The Western Intercollegiate continues with second-round play on Tuesday, April 16 before concluding with a final round on Wednesday, April 17. Texas will be paired with host San Jose State for Tuesday's second round and will tee off beginning at 10:04 a.m. PT (12:04 p.m. CT). Golf Channel will provide live coverage of Tuesday's and Wednesday's rounds from 6-9 p.m. CT.
The Lineup
- Senior Nathan Petronzio carded a 3-under 67 on Monday and is tied for second on the individual leaderboard, just one stroke off the lead. Sitting at even-par through his opening 10 holes, Petronzio posted birdies on holes 11 and 13 to move to 2-under. He made bogey on hole 16 but rallied to record back-to-back birdies on holes 17 and 18 to close out his 3-under 67.
- Sophomore Keaton Vo fired a 2-over 72 in the opening round and is tied for 31st in the individual standings. Vo was 3-over at the turn but registered two birdies (holes 12 and 18) and six pars against one bogey on the back nine.
- Sophomore Christiaan Maas registered a 3-over 73 and is tied for 41st place, while sophomore Tommy Morrison recorded a 5-over 75 and is tied for 63rd.
- Graduate Brian Stark fired a 6-over 76 and is tied for 70th place, and freshman Jack Gilbert carded an 11-over 81 and is tied for 90th.
