Diving's Gibson punches ticket to Paris in Women’s Springboard at U.S. Olympic Trials

Former Longhorn Alison Gibson posts runner-up finish to make Team USA, while Hailey Hernandez finishes seventh in Saturday’s final.
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Former University of Texas star Alison Gibson claimed her spot in the Paris Olympics with a runner-up performance in the Women's Springboard final on Saturday evening at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Diving at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center. Rising senior Hailey Hernandez placed seventh in Saturday's final.
The top two finishers in the men's and women's individual springboard events at the U.S. Olympic Trials earn automatic spots on the official Team USA roster.
During Saturday night's final, Gibson recorded a cumulative score (that included Thursday's semifinal round) of 635.10 to place second. Sarah Bacon took the top spot at 639.00 and Krysta Palmer, Gibson's synchro partner, finished third at 629.25. Hernandez took seventh at 572.80.
The event came down to the fifth and final dive of Saturday's session, when Gibson entered the round in the lead at 567.10 and was followed closely by Bacon in second (567.00) and Palmer in third (559.55). Palmer posted a score of 69.70 on her final dive, a forward 2 ½ somersault 2 twist pike (5154B). Gibson followed with a score of 68.00 on the same dive as Palmer (5154B), and Bacon closed the competition with a score of 72.00 on her final dive, a forward 2 ½ somersault 1 twist pike (5152B).
Gibson's evening session was also highlighted by a score of 70.50 on her fourth-round dive, a reverse 2 ½ somersault pike (305B), and a 66.00 on her first-round dive, an inward 2 ½ somersault pike (405B). Hernandez' final session was highlighted by a score of 60.20 on her fourth-round dive, a reverse 2 ½ somersault tuck (305C), and an identical score of 60.20 in on her second-round dive, a forward 3 ½ somersault tuck (107C).
Gibson entered Saturday night's final in second place at 317.70 after Thursday's semifinals. Bacon held the lead after the semifinals at 341.25, and Hernandez was in ninth place at 283.80.
