No. 7 Men's Track & Field's Neugebauer sets NCAA history for best first day of decathlon

Texas men advance four events to Friday's finals.
EUGENE, Ore. – Leo Neugebauer set an NCAA record for day one of the decathlon at the NCAA Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field.
Neugebauer's score of 4,685 points after five events was the best collegiate performance in NCAA history. He's now the eighth-best performer with the 13th-best performance in world history in the decathlon. His day was highlighted by a decathlon NCAA record in the shot put with a heave of 17.46m (57-3.50).
He began the day running the 100-meter in 10.64 seconds, .03 seconds off of his personal best. He added the day's best jump of 7.86m (25-9.50) in the long jump for a personal best in his collegiate career. In high jump, the defending decathlon champion matched his outdoor personal best with a clearance of 2.07m (6-9.50). Nuegebauer's day concluded in the 400-meter run and he finished in 48.03 seconds.
Neugebauer leads the field of 24 and leads Peyton Bair of Mississippi State in second by 257 points and Austin West of Iowa in third by 413.
The Longhorns also qualified both men's relays with the 4x100 relay of Marcellus Moore, Nolton Shelvin, Almond Small and John Rutledge running a season best time of 38.60. It was the fifth-fastest time of the day. The 4x400 saw Chris Brinkley, Brian Herron, Elijah Mosley and Logan Popelka qualify by time with their run of 3:03.51.
Yusuf Bizimana was the final Longhorn to advance after finishing second in his heat of the 800-meter with a time of 1:48.27.
