No. 8 Volleyball takes down Texas A&M to open SEC play

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – No. 8 Texas Volleyball ushered in a new era of Southeastern Conference play with a 3-1 win over Texas A&M, 25-16, 14-25, 25-23, 25-20, on Friday in front of a record crowd of 9,236 at Reed Arena.
The Longhorns (6-3, 1-0) picked up their first ever SEC win and picked up the Longhorns' first victory in the Cotton Holdings Lone Star Showdown.
Devin Kahahawai had another big match with 11 total kills but she took over the match in the fourth set. She had six kills alone in the fourth set and served an ace to clinch the victory. Kahahawai hit .304 in the match and added five digs and three blocks.
Reagan Rutherford and Madisen Skinner also each had 11 kills to share the team lead with Kahahawai. Jenna Wenaas added eight kills and also finished with 11 digs, three assists and two service aces.
Marianna Singletary was the team's leading blocker with four total blocks and added seven kills on just 12 swings.
The Longhorns jumped out to a great start in the opening set, rolling to a 25-16 win. Texas hit .323 as a team and held the Aggies to an .057 hitting percentage. Wenaas was outstanding in the first set with five kills on just nine swings.
Texas A&M started the second set extremely well, got out to a big lead and never looked back taking the set 25-14.
The Longhorns trailed 9-7 in the third set before going on an impressive 10-2 run to grab a 17-11 lead. The Aggies came right back and chipped away at the lead with an 11-5 run to tie the set at 22-all. Despite a very tight finish, Texas managed to close out the set win 25-23 to retake the lead in the match.
Kahahawai took over the fourth set, with five kills and the match-clinching service ace. The teams were tied at 13-all before Texas used a 5-1 run to go up 18-14. The Aggies made it close late but the Longhorns finished on a 3-0 run to close out the win.
Texas will continue it's road trip to open SEC play, traveling to Baton Rouge to face LSU on Sunday at 2 p.m.
