The Longhorns earned their second-straight 7-0 sweep and moved to 3-0 this season.
Austin – No. 1 Texas Men's Tennis produced their second-straight 7-0 sweep with win over UTRGV on Wednesday at the Texas Tennis Center. The win moved the Longhorns to 3-0 less than a week into the 2025 season, including a 7-0 sweep of ACU in their last match on Sunday.
After winning the doubles point, the Longhorns received victories from junior No. 2 Sebastian Gorzny at No. 1, freshman Oliver Ojakaar at No. 4, junior No. 20 Jonah Braswell at No. 3 for the clinch, freshman Sebastian Eriksson at No. 5, freshman Rahul Sachdev at No. 6, and senior Pierre-Yves Bailly at No. 2.
Gorzny got things going quickly in singles with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Ivo Isqueiro to give Texas a 2-0 overall lead. Gorzny picked up the first break of the match for a 2-1 lead and then consolidated for 3-1, and after Isqueiro held on a deuce point for 3-2, Gorzny set out on a 7-0 run to position him with a 4-0 lead in the second set. Isqueiro got one game back on serve, but Gorzny closed out the win from there.
Ojakaar was next off the singles court with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Loic Young Kriegel. Ojakaar secured a break in the opening game and then held for a 2-0 lead. Kriegel held in the following game, but Ojakaar produced 5-0 run that led to a 1-0 advantage in the second set. Kriegel managed one more hold on a deuce point, but from there, Ojakaar closed on another 5-0 run for the win and a 3-0 Texas lead.
The clinch was then provided by Braswell, who won the first 10 games of the match on the way to a 6-0, 6-2 win over Santiago Serrano. Braswell won two deuce points in the first set for 4-0 and to claim the set and then opened with a 4-0 lead in the second. Serrano broke and held to cut the lead to 4-2, but Braswell bounced back to hold and break on a deuce point to take the match.
The teams played out the remaining matches and not long after Braswell clinched, Eriksson downed Will Roberts, 6-2, 6-1. Eriksson claimed a pair of deuce points to open the first set for a break and hold and then broke again for 3-0. Roberts responded with a deuce-point break and a hold to trail, 3-2, but Eriksson went on a 6-0 run, including two deuce points, providing him a 3-0 lead in the second set. Roberts picked up one more game on a break, however Eriksson finished on another 3-0 run as he won six of the last seven games for a 5-0 overall lead for the Longhorns.
Sachdev then captured the first dual match singles victory of his UT career with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Paolo Bonaguro. Sachdev jumped out to a 4-0 lead with bookend deuce-point wins for a hold and a break. However, Bonaguro answered with his own 4-0 run that started with a deuce-point break. At that point, Sachdev recaptured the momentum, going on a 7-0 run that including a deuce-point break for the first set and positioned him with a 5-0 lead in the second. Bonaguro got two games back, but Sachdev swept Bonaguro's final service game for the win.
That left it to Bailly to close out the 7-0 sweep with a 1-6, 6-4, 1-0 (4) superbreaker win over Sam Whitehead. After falling 6-1 in a first set that included two deuce points and trailing 3-1 in the second, Bailly's resilience came through as he went on a 3-0 for a 4-3 lead. Whitehead tied it again on a deuce-point hold in the next game, but Bailly held and broke to send it to a deciding third-set superbreaker. There, Bailly vaulted to a 4-0 advantage and never looked back as he maintained at least a three-point lead on his way to the six-point victory.
Earlier in doubles, Ojakaar and Eriksson secured the first doubles win with a 6-0 sweep of Serrano and Isqueiro at No. 2 to be the first off in doubles and with no deuce points.
Gorzny and Bailly then paired to clinch the doubles point with another 6-0 sweep over Bonaguro and Whitehead at No. 1. That match saw only one deuce point that was a break for Texas for a 5-0 lead.
Braswell and Sachdev then rounded out doubles play with a 7-5 win over Roberts and Eduardo Menezes at No. 3 in a match where both teams won three deuce points. Despite UTRGV winning the first three of those of the match, it stayed on serve all the way to 4-4 when Texas held on a deuce point for the tie. The teams then combined for three-straight breaks starting and finishing with the Longhorns, the last of which was on a deuce point for a 6-5 lead. Texas followed that with its second-straight deuce point win for a hold and the victory.
The Longhorns will be back on the courts on Sunday, Jan. 19, at 1 p.m. CT against Arizona State. That game is scheduled for the Texas Tennis Center pending a forecast of cold temperatures that could potentially force it indoors.
