The Longhorns swept Georgia Tech, 4-0, to advance to the ITA National Indoor Championships for the seventh-straight year.
Austin – No. 1 Texas Men's Tennis won the championship of the ITA Kickoff Weekend Austin Regional with a 4-0 sweep of Georgia Tech at the Weller Indoor Tennis Center on Sunday. With the win, the Longhorns advanced to the ITA National Indoor Championships for the seventh-straight year with this year's tournament taking place from February 14-17 in Dallas and Waco, Texas.
Texas took the doubles point with wins at Nos. 3 and 1 and continued with singles victories from freshman No. 3 Timo Legout at No. 1, junior No. 2 Sebastian Gorzny at No. 2, and freshman Sebastian Eriksson at No. 5, who clinched the sweep of the overall match.
Following doubles, Legout got things going quickly in singles with a 6-1, 6-1 win over No. 90 Nate Bonetto to give Texas the 2-0 lead. Both players held their opening service games with Bonetto doing so on a deuce point. However from there, Legout set out on a 10-0 run with only one of those games reaching deuce, which was for 4-1 in the first set. Following the run, Legout owned a 5-0 lead in the second set, and although Bonetto picked up a break for 5-1, Legout broke back for the win.
Gorzny extended the Longhorns lead to 3-0 with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Gabriele Brancatelli. Gorzny served first and opened on a 3-0 run with a break in the second game, which would turn out to be the only one for either player in the set, as Gorzny secured it on a deuce point after rallying from 0-40. In the second, Brancatelli held his first service game, but Gorzny went on a 5-0 run, including a deuce point break for 4-1. With the score 5-1, both players held their final serves with Gorzny's coming on a deuce point for the match.
The clinch came when Eriksson defeated Gianluca Carlini, 6-1, 6-3. In the first set, Eriksson produced the first break on a deuce point for a 1-0 lead. Carlini broke back to tie it up, 1-1, but Eriksson went on a 5-0 run to capture the first set. In the second, Eriksson moved out to a 2-0 lead on consecutive deuce points for a break and a hold. The next six games were then all on serve, including one deuce-point win for each player, until Eriksson broke again on a deuce point for the match.
The remaining singles matches went unfinished with the Longhorns holding leads on all three courts. Senior Pierre-Yves Bailly was leading Christophe Clement, 6-4, 4-0, at No. 3, and although Bailly started down 3-0 with Clement breaking in the first and third games, Bailly turned the set around with a 5-0 run. The last two games were then held at deuce with Bailly's providing him the set. Bailly continued his hot play in the second set, winning all four games before play was halted to give him a run of 10 of the last 11 games to close.
At No. 4, junior No. 20 Jonah Braswell led Krish Arora, 7-5, 7-1, when play stopped. The first set stayed on serve all the way to 4-4 when Braswell started a string of three-straight breaks that left him with a 6-5 lead. He then held to take the set and broke on a deuce point to being the second.
The last singles match saw sophomore No. 116 Lucas Brown leading Richard Biagiotti, 6-3, 2-3, when play stopped. Brown collected the only break of the first set for 3-1 on his way to the set win. He then broke on a deuce point to start the second set, and the last four games would all result in holds with Biagiotti claiming his on deuce points.
Earlier in doubles, the duo of Braswell and Eriksson was first off the court with a 6-3 win over Brancatelli and Bauer at No. 3. The Longhorns won their first game before Georgia Tech went on a 3-0 run with a break in the third game. From there, though, it was all Texas, as Braswell and Eriksson closed on a 5-0 run that included a deuce-point break for 3-3 and a deuce-point hold to win the match.
The No. 7 duo of Legout and Brown then secured the doubles point with a 6-4 win over the No. 19 pair of Arora and Clement at No. 1. The first six games of the match stayed on serve starting with Georgia Tech, which included two deuce-point holds for Texas for 2-2 and 3-3. However, the Longhorns' next deuce-point win would be for a break and 4-3 lead. That would be the first of three-straight breaks until Texas held again for the 6-4 win.
In the remaining doubles match, Grozny and Bailly were leading the No. 44 pair of Bonetto and Carlini, 6-5, at No. 2 when play stopped. Texas had surged to a 3-0 lead with a break in the second game and then held on a deuce point for 4-1. Georgia Tech then gathered a 3-0 run of its own to tie it, and the last three games stayed on serve, including a deuce-point hold for the Longhorns in the last game for 6-5.
Texas will next head on the road for a top-five match against No. 5 Virginia in Charlottesville on Sunday, February 2, at 11:30 a.m. ET/10:30 a.m. CT.
