Women’s Tennis’ Herea moves into NCAA Singles quarterfinals

Sophomore Carmen Herea earned a top-five victory to advance on Thursday in Orlando.
Orlando, Fla. – Texas Women's Tennis sophomore Carmen Herea moved into the NCAA Singles Championships quarterfinals on Thursday at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.
Herea, who is the 2 seed and ranked No. 21 in the pre-fall rankings, earned a top-five victory over 9-16 seed No. 5 Luciana Perry of Ohio State, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.
The first three games of the match were on serve starting with Perry and including a deuce-point hold for Herea in the second game. Perry then grabbed the first break of the match for 3-1 and held on a deuce point for 4-1. Herea later got the break back to trail 5-4, but Perry used another deuce-point win to break for the set.
In the second set, the first three games all went to deuce with Perry taking the first two on a hold and a break. She then led, 30-0, in the next game, but Herea rallied for a deuce-point break that started a 5-0 run, including another deuce-point break for 5-2. Perry then broke back for 5-3, but Herea generated one more deuce-point break for the set.
Perry started the third set with a break, but Herea once again compiled a 5-0 run that included deuce-point breaks in Perry's next three service games. Perry got one of those back for 5-2 as Herea looked to serve out the match, but Herea broke again to finish the match and advance.
Next up will be another top-five match against 9-16 seed No. 3 Reese Brantmeier of North Carolina at 10 a.m. ET/9 a.m. CT.
The NCAA singles and doubles competition will be conducted November 18-23. This will be the second year the individual championships will be played in the fall after having previously been played in May following the team championships.
