Women’s Tennis’ Herea finishes as NCAA Singles quarterfinalist

Sophomore Carmen Herea earned All-America honors with her run in the tournament.
Orlando, Fla. – Texas Women's Tennis sophomore Carmen Herea finished as a quarterfinalist at NCAA Singles Championships on Friday at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.
Herea, who was the 2 seed and ranked No. 21 in the pre-fall rankings, fell to 9-16 seed No. 3 Reese Brantmeier of North Carolina, 7-6 (8), 6-0.
Brantmeier jumped out to a 4-0 lead with breaks in the first and third games, including on a deuce point in the third. The next two games were both holds for a 5-1 lead for Brantmeier, but Herea came storming back, breaking on a deuce point to even the set, 5-5, before holding for a 6-5 lead of her own. Brantmeier also held to send it to a tiebreaker where she took a 3-1 lead, but Herea evened it at 3-3. Brantmeier later moved out to a 6-4 lead to have two set points, but Herea erased them as part of a 3-0 run for a set point of her own. Brantmeier was able to win her serve to even it, but Herea grabbed a mini-break for an 8-7 lead for a set point on her own serve. However, Brantmeier came back with a 3-0 run for the set.
In the second, Brantmeier took a 2-0 lead, and although Herea had a break point at deuce to get back on serve, Brantmeier secured the point and went on to claim the last three games for the match.
