Sophomore becomes first Texas quarterback to record passing, rushing and receiving touchdown in single game since 1946
AUSTIN, Texas — Arch Manning rewrote the record books for one of the most storied programs in college football, as No. 17/18/17 Texas dominated Arkansas, 52-37, in front of 102,361 fans at Darrell K Royal – Texas Memorial Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Manning became the first Longhorn quarterback to register a passing, rushing and receiving touchdown in a single game since Bobby Layne accomplished the feat against Missouri in the Cotton Bowl Classic on Jan. 1, 1946.
The sophomore mounted a career-high 389 passing yards and six total touchdowns, finishing one shy of matching a school record set by Clyde Littlefield in 1915.
Manning and the Longhorns (8-3, 5-2 SEC) scored on seven of their first nine drives, as Texas posted its most points in a conference contest since joining the SEC ahead of the 2024 campaign.
Across their first three possessions, the 6-foot-4, 219-pound signal caller completed eight of his first nine passes for 191 yards and found the end zone three times.
Manning was a perfect 3-for-3 on the Longhorns' opening drive, capping off the series with a 46-yard throw to DeAndre Moore Jr. Moore Jr. finished with three touchdown receptions, which marked the most by a Texas player in four years.
After holding the Razorbacks (2-9, 0-7 SEC) to a pair of field goals on their first two possessions, the Longhorns orchestrated a 10-play, 75-yard drive, punctuating the sequence with a trick play to vault Texas ahead, 14-6.
On 2nd and goal from the 4-yard line, the Longhorns dialed up a 'Philly Special,' with Manning on the receiving end of a pass from go-to target Parker Livingstone.
The ensuing possession, the duo linked up once again on a 54-yard strike from Manning. Livingstone reeled in two catches for a game-high 104 receiving yards, becoming the first SEC player with six receiving scores and one passing touchdown in a season since 2018.
Arkansas pulled back within one on its first touchdown of the day midway through the second quarter, before Texas kicker Mason Shipley drilled a 44-yard field goal as time expired to push the lead back to 24-20 at the break.
The Longhorns started the second half just how they kicked off the contest, tallying touchdowns on each of their first three series.
On the first drive of the third quarter, Manning etched his name in history by scampering for a 3-yard score and his fourth touchdown of the game. The New Orleans native was also the first SEC player in more than a decade to cross the goal line through the air, on the ground and hauling in a pass in a contest.
With Texas in front, 31-20, Manning connected with Moore Jr. for consecutive scores on back-to-back possessions to balloon the advantage to 22 points.
Overall, the Longhorns exploded for 490 yards of total offense, highlighted by 393 pass yards.
Texas' defense also found the end zone on a 52-yard scoop-and-score fumble return by Liona Lefau in the final frame.
On the forced fumble, Colin Simmons notched his 10th sack of the season, which marks the most by a Longhorn since Jackson Jeffcoat (13) and Cedric Reed (10) both reached double-digits in 2013.
With the victory, Texas has won 19 of its last 20 home games, including eight straight contests in Austin. The Longhorns now boast a 58-23 lead over the Razorbacks in a series that dates back to 1894.
The Longhorns conclude their regular season slate against No. 3/3/3 Texas A&M on Friday. The Cotton Holdings Lone Star Showdown is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Darrell K Royal – Texas Memorial Stadium. The 120th installment of the rivalry is set to be broadcast on ABC.
