Longhorns become first team with three top-10 wins in regular season since 2019
AUSTIN, Texas — Fifteen years was worth the wait.
In the first Cotton Holdings Lone Star Showdown in Austin since 2010, No. 16/16/17 Texas used a second-half surge to mount a 27-17 win over No. 3/3/3 Texas A&M in front of 103,632 fans at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium on Friday night.
The Longhorns (9-3, 6-2 SEC) scored on four of their first five possessions after the break, outscoring the Aggies (11-1, 7-1 SEC), 24-7, across the final 30 minutes. With the victory, Texas is the first team with a trio of top-10 wins in a regular season since the 2019 LSU Tigers.
Quarterback Arch Manning tallied 232 yards of total offense and a pair of touchdowns, scampering for the game-clinching 35-yard score midway through the fourth quarter.
The Longhorns secured interceptions on back-to-back defensive plays to cap off their 13th victory in the last 18 meetings against Texas A&M.
In his final contest at DKR-TMS, defensive back Michael Taaffe picked off signal caller Marcel Reed at the 3-yard line to halt the Aggies' drive.
Following the Longhorns' ensuing offensive stalled, defensive back Kobe Black recorded his first career interception on Reed's next throw.
In the win, linebacker Liona Lefau collected a career-high 11 tackles. Meanwhile, Ethan Burke posted a career-best nine tackles and blocked his second field goal attempt of the season.
Offensively, Quintrevion Wisner rushed for a season-high 155 yards, becoming the third Texas player with multiple 100-yard rushing games against Texas A&M this century, joining Cendric Benson (2003-04) and Cody Johnson (2008-09).
Tight end Jack Endries also added a season-best 93 yards on four catches.
After a stalemate through the first quarter, Mason Shipley converted a 41-yard field goal to put the Longhorns ahead, 3-0.
Texas A&M responded with 10 unanswered points in the second frame, highlighted by an 8-yard KC Concepcion run in the final minute of the half.
On Texas' opening possession of the third quarter, Shipley drilled a 46-yard kick to cut the deficit to 10-6.
With the Longhorns forcing their second consecutive 3-and-out, Texas orchestrated a 6-play, 70-yard scoring drive to regain the lead at the 7:32 mark.
Manning lofted a 29-yard pass toward Ryan Wingo in the back of the end zone for the wideout's third touchdown in the last four games.
With Texas holding a narrow 13-10 advantage, Manning connected with Endries for a 54-yard catch and run to place the Longhorns on the Aggie's 2-yard line.
On the next play, freshman tight end Nick Towsend received an end-around to push the cushion back to two scores.
Texas A&M would pull back within a field goal, but Manning's rushing touchdown helped Texas wrap up its 19th win in its last 20 contests at home.
The Longhorns now boast a 78-37-5 lead in the all-time series with the Aggies, including a 47-13-1 mark in Austin.
