Junior Tommy Morrison earned his first collegiate victory at the Amer Ari Invitational and set program records for low 54-hole total score and low 54-hole total vs. par.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — University of Texas junior Tommy Morrison has been named the Southeastern Conference Men's Golfer of the Week, the conference office announced Wednesday. This marks Morrison's first career weekly league honor.
Morrison earned his first collegiate victory at the Amer Ari Invitational (Feb. 6-8), as he carded a 54-hole total of 21-under 195 (67-65-63) to advance to a playoff with Hampton Roberts of North Carolina. On the first playoff hole (18th hole), Roberts made a par before Morrison sank a 15-foot birdie to claim the individual title.
Morrison set Texas program records for low 54-hole total score at 195 (previous: 196 by Doug Ghim at the 2018 NCAA Raleigh Regional) and low 54-hole total vs. par at 21-under (previous: 18-under by Beau Hossler at the 2015 Nike Golf Collegiate Invitational).
Morrison started the final day at the Amer Ari Invitational four strokes off the lead and in fourth place in the individual standings. He began his final round on a heater and reached 8-under through his first 11 holes. After a bogey on 12, Morrison made birdies on 14 and 17 to finish with a collegiate-best 18-hole score of 9-under 63.
Morrison led No. 5 Texas to a third-place team finish at the Amer Ari Invitational, where the tourney's 20-team field featured nine squads ranked in the top 25. He helped the Longhorns set a school record for low 54-hole total score with a three-round total of 808. The previous mark was 813 (-39) at the 2018 NCAA Raleigh Regional (on a par-71 course). Morrison also paced the Longhorns to a program record for low 54-hole total vs. par at 56-under. The previous mark was 50-under at the 2022 Augusta Haskins Award Invitational.
Morrison ranks No. 7 in the latest World Amateur Golf Ranking (Feb. 12) and No. 4 in the latest NCAA individual rankings by Scoreboard (Feb. 12). He has registered a 68.80 scoring average over the first five stroke-play tournaments this season and has placed in the top-13 in each of those five stroke-play events. Thirteen of his 15 rounds this year have been par or better, including 10 rounds in the 60s.
Morrison and the Longhorns return to the course when they compete at the Hayt Collegiate Tournament on March 8-10 (Saturday-Monday) in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
