Saturday’s wins marked fourth 10-0 start for Texas under head coach Mike White
AUSTIN, Texas – Less than 24 hours following an emotionally-charged, extra inning win over Texas Tech, The University of Texas softball program maintained its perfect start to the 2025 season with a 6-0 win over UMass followed by an 8-3 victory against Maryland during Saturday's slate of the Bevo Classic hosted by the Longhorns.
Citlaly Gutierrez (2-0) and Cambria Salmon (S, 1) picked up right where Teagan Kavan left off Friday night and combined to strikeout 12 of 26 UMass batters faced on a total of just 98 pitches throughout the game's seven innings. The duo issued just one walk – the second batter of the second inning – and scattered three hits with only one going for extra bases, a one-out double to the right-centerfield gap in the top of the seventh.
As the duo extended Texas pitching's consecutive scoreless streak to 12.1 straight frames, it was the Longhorns' catchers that provided the spark for the UT offense against UMass.
Katie Cimusz broke the 0-0 tie with a two-out triple to the left-centerfield gap in the bottom of the second, before Katie Stewart drove in Texas' third run with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third. Reese Atwood capped the scoring against the Minutewomen with a run-scoring single to left field in the bottom of the fourth. Atwood, herself, accounted for the Longhorns' fifth run of the contest, too, when she scored on a throwing error by UMass while Leighann Goode was stealing second.
Against Maryland, Mac Morgan (2-0) stretched to scoreless streak to 17 consecutive innings, before surrounding a two-out single to right-centerfield in the top of the fifth, allowing the Terrapins to avoid a five-inning, mercy rule result.
The eight-run mercy rule nearly came into play, because the Texas offense plated eight runs throughout the game's first two innings thanks in large part to a seven-run bottom of the second that was highlighted by a three-run home run off the bat of Stewart. Kaydee Bennett and Atwood combined to drive in four runs during the inning as well to balloon the Longhorn lead from 1-0 after the first to 8-0 after two complete innings.
FROM HEAD COACH MIKE WHITE
"Obviously, the offense was a little off and on today, but I thought the pitching did a pretty good job. We had a little bit of a tough time closing some games out, but we were able to get a lot of pitchers in and Teagan (Kavan) was able to rest, which was big for us. So, we'll see what happens tomorrow and who we are going to through (against Texas Tech).
GAME NOTES
- Mac Morgan's four strikeouts in 5.1 innings of work against Maryland set a season high for the Longhorns' senior right-hander.
- The four strikeouts were the most by Morgan since fanning five in five innings of action against Florida in the Women's College World Series on June 1, 2024.
- Against UMass to open Texas' two-game slate on Saturday, Joley Mitchell did not register an official plate appearance as the second-year Longhorn drew a career-high three walks against Minutewomen pitcher.
- Mitchell went on to add two more base on balls against Maryland later in the day to push her walk total to five across two games on Saturday.
- Over the course of Texas' two-hour game against UMass on Saturday, Texas catcher Reese Atwood was credited with two stolen bases, the most in a single game for the third-year Longhorn.
- Texas' 6-0 victory over UMass on Saturday afternoon marked the fourth shutout by Longhorn pitching this season and first since blanking St. John's, 5-0, on Saturday, Feb. 8.
- By closing out Texas' 8-3 win over Maryland, Texas junior Citlaly Gutierrez was credited with her sixth career save, tying her with Erica Wright (2015-18), Amy Bradford (2002-05) and Christa Williams (1998-99) for third on the program's career saves list.
- Gutierrez is now one save shy of tying Blaire Luna (2010-13) and Erin Treselt (2007-10) atop the program's career saves leaderboard.
