No. 1/1 Softball earns fourth run-rule victory on young season
02.16.2025 | Softball
Texas opens season with 11-0 mark for second consecutive year.
AUSTIN, Texas – Texas Tech made a pitching change before Texas' third batter of the first inning stepped to the plate. It was a bit of foreshadowing of things during the Longhorns' 11-0 win on Sunday afternoon to conclude the weekend's Bevo Classic.
The No. 11/8 Red Raiders (8-3) made three pitching changes over the course of the game's five innings with only Brenlee Gonzales able to retire three consecutive Longhorn batters and that came after she entered the circle in the bottom of the fourth following a Reese Atwood home run and Katie Stewart double.
In between the first pitching change and Gonzales getting Katie Cimusz to flyout to end the bottom of the fourth, Texas put together a four-run bottom of the first, a six-run bottom of the third and adding a single run in the fourth.
Stewart began the scoring fest with a single through the left side to score Ashton Maloney and Kayden Henry in the bottom of the first, before Joley Mitchell doubled the Longhorn lead with a two-run triple to plate Atwood and Stewart.
Two innings later, Stewart's three-run home run highlighted a bottom of the third that also included run-scoring hits off the bat of Kaydee Bennett and Ashton Maloney. A seventh run of the frame scored when Cimusz scored from third on a double play.
FROM HEAD COACH MIKE WHITE
"It was a solid performance, obviously. The key was the first inning by getting out of that trouble after a couple of infield hits there, but Teagan (Kavan) was able to get out of it. But our offense was solid throughout the day. It was great seeing (Katie Stewart) drive in five runs and a home run and Reese (Atwood) as well."
