Freshman Timo Legout earned his third weekly conference honor of the season, and it is the second-straight week a Longhorn has been the Athlete of the Week.
Austin – Texas Men's Tennis freshman Timo Legout was named the SEC Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week, the conference announced Wednesday. It marks the third weekly conference honor of the season for Legout who has twice been named Freshman of the Week, but it is his first as Athlete of the Week. It is also the second consecutive time a Longhorn has earned the Athlete of the Week honor after senior Pierre-Yves Bailly did so last week.
Legout led Texas to the semifinals of the ITA National Indoor Championships, which is the furthest any team from the SEC advanced. The Longhorns only fell to eventual champion Wake Forest, 4-3, with two singles matches that both went against them in third sets.
Legout went 2-0 in singles with an unfinished match he was leading in a third-set tiebreaker, all against top-60 opponents at No. 1. He won his last match by a decisive 6-4, 6-2 score against No. 17 Stefan Dostanic of No. 2 Wake Forest, who clinched the championship for the Demon Deacons in the next round. Legout was first off the singles court in that match, tying the overall score at 1-1 after he closed his match on a 6-0 run.
Legout was four points away from a potential victory over No. 44 Rafael Jodar of No. 5 Virginia with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-6 (3-1) lead when play halted following the 4-1 Texas win. Legout had another decisive score to open the tournament with a 6-4, 6-1 victory over No. 60 Theo Papamalamis of No. 14 Texas A&M, a match the Longhorns also won, 4-1. Despite not winning a doubles match, two of the three contests he was involved in only featured one break between the teams.
Legout is now 19-2 overall in singles this year, including 6-1 in dual matches, with 13 ranked wins, eight of which are in the top 50. In doubles, he is 14-6 overall with five ranked wins and three in the top 20.
