No. 1/1 Softball concludes Hillenbrand Invitational with fourth win

Texas has now earned run-rule victories in four of last six games
TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Texas' response to its first loss on the season continued to grow louder after the Longhorns knocked off Colorado State, 10-2, in five innings to conclude UT's five-game slate at the Hillenbrand Invitational in Tucson, Ariz. Texas has now outscored its opponents, 48-8, since dropping a four-run contest to Stanford on Friday afternoon.
Using momentum from its four-run victory over No. 13/11 Arizona on Saturday afternoon, Texas' offense picked up where it left off by recording three first-inning hits before busting into the run column with an eight-run top of the second – all with two outs – to take an early 8-0 lead over the Rams. The inning was highlighted by Katie Stewart's first career grand slam and ended a triple shy of the team hitting for the cycle after Leighann Goode and Katie Cimusz recorded singles and Kayden Henry hit a run-scoring double during the frame.
After Colorado State (5-10) plated single runs in the second and third innings to cut the Texas lead to six, the Longhorns put the game back into run-rule territory with two runs in the top of the fifth after Ashton Maloney scored on a wild pitch and Stewart driving in Scott with a two-out single.
Citlaly Gutierrez (4-0), who picked up the win in relief against Arizona the night before, capped her 5.0-inning, 81-pitch outing by finishing off the Rams on 16 pitches in the bottom of the fifth.
FROM HEAD COACH MIKE WHITE
"Today was a good finish to the weekend. Citlaly (Gutierrez) pitched really well. She had a little bit of trouble here and there, but for the most part, she did well. Our top-of-the-lineup hitters, Ashton Maloney and Kayden Henry, went 6-for-6, so that helped, and then Katie Stewart's home run was really big. I think we really just kept things rolling and just passed the bat during that big, eight-run inning. I think we were able to do a lot of damage with two outs in the innings as well, which was really good and showed a lot of concentration to make sure we kept the inning rolling."
