Austin – No. 4 Texas Men's Tennis downed No. 51 Ole Miss, 6-1, on Monday at the Texas Tennis Center. The win completed a sweep of their opening SEC homestand as they moved to 2-0 in conference play.
The Longhorns took the doubles point with wins at Nos. 2 and 1, and after Ole Miss earned its lone point with a singles win at No. 4, Texas collected victories from freshman No. 7 Timo Legout at No. 1, senior No. 58 Pierre-Yves Bailly at No. 3, junior No. 15 Sebastian Gorzny at No. 2 for the clinch, sophomore Lucas Brown at No. 5, and freshman Evan Burnett at No. 6. The win for Burnett was the first of his UT career in a dual match.
Following doubles and the Rebels' win at No. 4, Legout regained the lead for the Longhorns with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Marcel Kamrowski. Legout moved out to a 3-0 in the first set with a break in the second game. After each player held on a deuce point, Kamrowski again held for 4-2 and then got the break back for 4-3. However from there, Legout set out on a 6-0 run to win the set and post a 4-0 lead in the second. The last four games were then on serve to Legout's win.
Moments later, Bailly extended the lead to 3-0 with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Isac Stromberg. Although Stromberg broke to begin the match, Bailly broke back on a deuce point. He then broke again for a 3-1 lead, and this time Stromberg broke back on a deuce point for 3-2. At that point, Bailly went on a 6-0 run to capture the first set and establish a 3-0 lead in the second. Stromberg came back with a 3-0 run to tie it, but Bailly would not relinquish the lead as he held and broke for 5-3. That would be the first of three-straight breaks to end the match.
Just moments after that, it was Gorzny delivering the clinch with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Noah Schlagenhauf. In the first set, Schlagenhauf broke first on a deuce point, which he consolidated for a 3-1 lead. Gorzny later got the break back on a deuce point for 4-4, and the next three games were held until Gorzny broke against at deuce for the 7-5 win. In the second set, Schlagenhauf again broke first for a 3-2 lead, but it was all Gorzny from there as he closed on a 4-0 run capped by consecutive deuce points.
The teams played out the remaining two matches with Brown getting home first with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Benjamin Martin. Starting with Martin, the first four games were on serve for 2-2 until Brown compiled a 4-0 run for the first set that included deuce point wins for 4-2 and 5-2. The first five games of the second set were then a mirror image of the first set with Brown breaking first for a 3-2 lead. He then consolidated for 4-2, and although the next game went to deuce the rest of the match stayed on serve to his win.
That left the match at No. 6 where Burnett had gone to a tiebreaker in his first set, but played a decisive second set for his first dual match win as a Longhorn, 7-6 (3), 6-1, over Matthieu Chambonniere. In the first set, Chambonniere broke first, doing so on a deuce point, and then consolidated for a 4-1 lead. Burnett responded with a 3-0 run that included a deuce-point break of his own, and although he broke again at deuce for a 6-5 lead, Chambonniere broke back to send it to a tiebreaker. There, Burnett grabbed the first mini-break for a 3-2 lead. That started a 4-0 run for him for a 6-2 advantage, and he finished the set two points later. Both players held their opening serve in the second set, but Burnett took over after that, finishing on a 5-0 run with only one deuce point that was for 4-1.
Prior to the five-straight wins, Ole Miss had been first off the singles court as freshman Sebastian Eriksson was downed by Loan Lestir, 6-4, 6-0, at No. 4. After the first three games were breaks starting with Lestir, the next four were holds until Eriksson got the break back for 4-4. However, the rest of the match was controlled by Lestir, who went on a 9-0 run for the win, including deuce-point games in two of the last three.
Earlier in doubles, Bailly and freshman Oliver Ojakaar were first off the court with a 6-2 win over Martin and Chambonniere at No. 2. The Longhorns broke first for a 2-1 lead and then claimed the only other break of the match for 5-2 before serving it out.
The clinch then came at No. 1 where Legout and Gorzny topped Stromberg and Kai Milburn, 6-4. After the Longhorns held on a deuce point for 2-2, they secured the only break of the match for 3-2 on the way to the 6-4 win.
That left the match at No. 3 unfinished with Brown and junior Jonah Braswell tied, 3-3, against Kamrowski and Schlagenhauf. The first three games of the match all went to deuce with Longhorns picking up a hold and a break in the first two, however the Rebels broke back in the third one and the rest of the match was on serve until play halted.
The Longhorns (11-2) return to the court for their first road SEC match at No. 49 Florida on Sunday, March 2, at 12 p.m. ET/11 a.m. CT.
