No. 5 Men’s Golf’s Morrison wins individual title in playoff at Amer Ari Invitational

Tommy Morrison cards a career-best 9-under 63 in Saturday’s final round and drains a birdie on the first playoff hole to claim his first collegiate victory.
KOHALA COAST, Hawaii — Junior Tommy Morrison fired a collegiate-best 18-hole score of 9-under-par 63 in Saturday's final round and drained a birdie putt on the first playoff hole to earn his first collegiate individual victory at the Amer Ari Invitational at Mauna Lani Resort Golf Club. The No. 5 Texas Men's Golf team finished in third place in the team standings and set program records for both low 54-hole total score (808) and low 54-hole total vs. par (56-under) in the three-day tournament.
Morrison, who started the day four strokes off the lead and in fourth place in the individual standings, was 8-under through his first 11 holes on Saturday. After a bogey on 12, he made birdies on 14 and 17 to finish at 9-under 63 for his round and a 54-hole total of 21-under 195 (67-65-63). He advanced to a playoff with North Carolina's Hampton Roberts (67-61-67), and on the first playoff hole (18th hole), Roberts made par before Morrison sank a 15-foot birdie to claim the individual title.
In addition to Morrison's effort, Texas counted scores from junior Luke Potter (7-under 65), freshman Daniel Bennett (5-under 67) and junior Christiaan Maas (even-par 72) on Saturday. Potter tied for 10th in the individual standings with a 54-hole score of 14-under 202 (69-68-65).
The Longhorns began the day in fourth place and moved up one spot into third with a three-round total of 56-under 808 (272-269-267). No. 9 Oklahoma State earned the team championship with a 54-hole score of 64-under 800 (262-271-267), while No. 6 North Carolina placed second at 59-under 805 (268-267-270). No. 3 Auburn finished fourth at 53-under 811 (280-270-261). The 20-team field features nine squads in the top 25 of the latest Scoreboard powered by Clippd poll (Feb. 5).
Texas set a school record for low 54-hole total score with its three-round total of 808. The previous mark was 813 (-39) at the 2018 NCAA Raleigh Regional. The Longhorns also established a program record for low 54-hole total vs. par at 56-under. The previous record was 50-under at the 2022 Augusta Haskins Award Invitational.
The Longhorns return to the course on March 8-10 (Saturday-Monday) when they compete at the Hayt Collegiate Tournament in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
The Lineup
- Junior Tommy Morrison captured his first collegiate individual title with a birdie on the first playoff hole to defeat North Carolina's Hampton Roberts. Morrison (67-65-63) and Roberts (67-61-67) both registered 54-hole totals of 21-under 195. During Saturday's final round, Morrison posted a collegiate-best 18-hole score of 9-under 63. Starting on hole 1, he was 8-under through his first 11 holes with birdies on holes 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10 and 11 before a bogey on 12 set him back to 7-under. Morrison responded with birdies on 14 and 17 and four pars to finish at 9-under. After Roberts made par on the first playoff hole (18), Morrison drained a 15-foot birdie to clinch the individual title.
- Junior Luke Potter recorded a season-best 7-under 65 on Saturday and tied for 10th place in the individual standings at 14-under 202 (69-68-65). Starting on hole 3, Potter tallied eight birdies (holes 5, 7, 10, 12, 13, 15, 18 and 1) against just one bogey (hole 8) in his final round.
- Freshman Daniel Bennett posted a 5-under 67 in his final round and tied for 16th with a three-round total of 12-under 204 (66-71-67). Starting on hole 2, Bennett registered five birdies (holes 2, 6, 10, 17 and 18) and an eagle on the par-five 15th hole against a pair of bogeys on Saturday.
- Making his collegiate debut at this event, freshman Eduardo Derbez Torres carded a 2-over 74 on Saturday and tied for 58th with a 54-hole total of 5-under 211 (70-67-74). Starting on hole 1, he recorded three birdies (holes 2, 10 and 13) in his final round.
- Junior Christiaan Maas registered an even-par 72 in his final round and tied for 63rd with a three-round score of 4-under 212 (71-69-72). Starting on hole 3, Maas tallied three birdies (holes 6, 9 and 15) and added an eagle on the par-five 2nd hole (his final hole of the tourney) on Saturday.
- Competing as an individual, sophomore Jack Gilbert fired a 3-under 69 on Saturday and tied for 37th with a 54-hole total of 8-under 208 (69-70-69). Starting on hole 16, Gilbert tallied seven birdies (holes 16, 18, 1, 2, 4, 9 and 10) in his final round.
