No. 1/1 Softball runs season-opening winning streak to four
02.08.2025 | Softball
Texas’ offense outscored opponents, 34-7, through four games
BEAUMONT , Texas – Twenty-four hours after Texas' pitching blanked its Opening Day opponents, the Longhorn offense busted out by outscoring St. John's (5-0) and Lamar (13-7) a combined 18-7 over 14 innings on Saturday.
Over the course of the day's 14 innings of game action, the Texas offense plated at least one run in seven different frames, including the last four consecutive innings that resulted in 13 unanswered runs against Lamar during the day's night gap.
The offensive outburst was thanks in large part to the Longhorn duo of Reese Atwood and Katie Stewart, who combined to go 6-for-15 (.400) with eight runs batted in. All six of the hits were extra base hits, including a game-tying solo home run off the bat of Stewart in the top of the fourth against Lamar.
FROM HEAD COACH MIKE WHITE
"Yeah, getting two wins on the day was the ultimate goal, really. Obviously, during the last game (at Lamar), we fell behind 1-0 and it was a tight ballgame, but we were able to bust it open there at the end, that was a good job there by everyone. I thought Kayden Henry had an excellent day and that double play there at the end was huge for sure."
GAME NOTES
- By shutting St. John's out of the run column to begin Saturday's action, it marked the first time since 2012 that Texas opened a season with three consecutive shutouts.
- The Longhorns went on to blank Lamar in the first inning before an unearned run scored with two outs in the bottom of the second to end the scoreless streak at 18.2 consecutive frames.
- With her run-scoring triple in the top of the seventh against Lamar, Kayden Henry became just the fifth different student-athlete in program history to be credited with two triples in a single game.
- Henry is the first to accomplish the feat since Mia Scott did so against McNeese on Feb. 16, 2022.
- Texas' seven runs in the top of the seventh against Lamar on Saturday night marked the first time this season the Longhorn offense scored six-or-more runs in a single inning, the most since scoring nine runs in the bottom of the fourth against Northwestern on Saturday, May 18.
- First-year Longhorn Rachel Wells sparked Texas' seven-run top of the seventh against Lamar with a single to left field, marking her first hit since joining the Texas program.
- The 13 runs scored by the Texas offense against Lamar were the most runs scored in a single game by the Longhorns since UT pushed 14 across the plate on Saturday, May 18 against Northwestern in the NCAA Austin Regional.
- By earning two wins on Saturday, Texas has now opened back-to-back seasons with four-or-more consecutive wins for the first time since doing so over a three-season span from 2019 to 2021.
- In her first career start, Texas true freshman right-handed pitcher Cambria Salmon tossed five scoreless innings against St. John's.
- Throughout those five innings of work, Salmon faced one over the minimum, struck out five, issued one walk and surrendered just a single.
UP NEXT
- Texas (4-0) will conclude its three-cities-in-three-days opening weekend on Sunday, Feb. 9, when the Longhorns play Tulsa (11:30 AM) and Sam Houston (2 PM)
