Texas pushes winning streak to 15 games, ties the 2006 squad at 26-1 for best start in program history
COLUMBUS, Ohio – With over 1,378 pairs of eyes throughout Buckeye Field glued to the marquee matchup of the weekend's Ohio State Tournament, The University of Texas softball program added another gem to its early-season résumé with a 4-2 win over Ohio State that followed a 6-1 victory over Dayton.
The pair of wins capped a 5-0 weekend in Columbus and marked the sixth victory for Texas over the last six days, dating back to last Wednesday's 4-0 win over Baylor at Red & Charline McCombs Field. In total, the Longhorns have reeled off 15 consecutive victories since dropping its lone contest of the season to then-No. 18/20 Stanford on Friday, Feb. 21 in Tucson, Ariz.
Against Dayton to begin the day, Texas used the long ball to down the Flyers as Vanessa Quiroga, Leighann Goode and Katie Cimusz all sent a Dayton pitch over the outfield fence. Reese Atwood drove in two runs as well to push her career runs batted in (RBI) total to 173, five back of Taylor Thom's program record 178 set during the 2014 campaign.
Hours later, it was the home run ball, again, that sparked Texas' offense as Mia Scott sent the fourth pitch of the game over the right-centerfield fence to give the Longhorns a quick 2-0 lead over the Buckeyes in the top of the first. Ashton Maloney and Scott doubled the UT advantage with a run-scoring double in the second and a run-scoring single in the second and fourth innings, respectively.
Ohio State broke into the run column in the bottom of the sixth with a two-run home run to cut the Longhorns lead in half, before Teagan Kavan (9-1) responded by retiring the next four consecutive batters, before giving way to Citlaly Gutierrez (S, 3) to get the final two outs of the contest.
FROM HEAD COACH MIKE WHITE
"Yeah, it was a good result by the end of the day. Obviously, our top two hitters – Ashton (Maloney) and Mia (Scott) did a great job tonight, they both got two hits, and we were able to put some early runs on the board against Ohio State with that home run by Mia. Teagan (Kavan) struggled a little bit with her control but managed to get a number of strikeouts. I think we were able to finish with 12 between her and Citlaly (Gutierrez). And Citlaly did a wonderful job coming in and closing the door, too."
