Longhorns split first day of East vs. West after falling to No. 9 Cal
AUSTIN, Texas - No. 10 Texas Beach Volleyball opened day one of the East vs. West Invitational defeating No. 13 Grand Canyon University, 4-1 before falling to No. 9 California Berkeley, 3-2, at home at the Whitaker Sports Complex.
Texas scored its first point of the day against GCU from the No. 2 pair of Emma Grace Robertson and Katie Hashman, 21-18, 21-15. After entering into a third set, Macey Butler and Noa Sonneville posted the second point for the Longhorns, 21-16, 25-27, 15-13. The No. 5 pair (Carys Patton/Vivian Johnson) added a 21-12, 21-15 win followed by a 21-15, 23-21 win from the No. 1 pair (Chloe Charles/Eva Liisa Kuivonen). GCU scored its only point against the No. 3 pair (Karin Zolnercikova/Maddison Parmelly), 16-21, 21-19, 15-11.
The No. 4 pair of Butler and Sonneville opened the second dual of the day with a 23-14, 21-13 win. The Bears scored the next two points defeating the No. 2 (Robertson/Hashman) and No. 5 pairs (Patton/Johnson), 23-21, 17-21, 17-15 and 23-21, 21-9. Zolnercikova and Parmelly tied up the dual with a 21-18, 21-15 win. The Bears defeated the Longhorns with a 21-16, 21-12 win over the No. 1 pair of Charles and Kuivonen.
The Longhorns return tomorrow at the Wright-Whitaker Sports Complex to face two ranked opponents, No. 2 LMU and No. 11 Arizona State.
