No. 2 Men’s Golf earns team title at Valspar Collegiate Invitational

Bennett ties for second individually at 16-under during the 54-hole tourney.
PALM CITY, Fla. — The No. 2 Texas Men's Golf team fired a final-round score of 11-under 273 on Tuesday to post a dominant 13-stroke victory in the Valspar Collegiate Invitational at the Floridian National Golf Club. Freshman Daniel Bennett tied for second individually with a 54-hole score of 16-under 197 (64-67-66).
Texas posted a three-round total of 36-under par 816 (271-272-273) to claim its third team championship of the season, as the Longhorns previously won team titles at the Southwestern Invitational (Jan. 27-29) and The Hayt (Mar. 8-10). The Longhorns set a tournament record for 54-hole low team score (816), topping the previous mark of 818 by Pepperdine in 2022.
The 17-team field at the Valspar Collegiate included the top three teams in the country and 11 squads in the top 25 of the latest Scoreboard powered by Clippd poll (Mar. 19). No. 3 Arizona State placed second at 23-under 829 (278-273-278), and No. 14 Florida State took third at 22-under 830 (276-281-273). No. 7 Oklahoma finished fourth at 21-under 831 (282-273-276), while No. 1 Auburn was fifth at 20-under 832 (281-275-276).
In Tuesday's final round, Texas counted scores from Bennett (5-under 66), junior Christiaan Maas (5-under 66), sophomore Jack Gilbert (1-under 70) and junior Luke Potter (even-par 71).
North Carolina's David Ford earned individual medalist honors with a three-round total of 18-under 195 (68-63-64). Bennett and Jase Summy of Oklahoma (65-64-68) tied for second just two strokes back at 16-under 197. Maas (70-69-66) and Gilbert (67-68-70) both tied for eighth place in the individual standings at 8-under 205, marking Gilbert's best collegiate career finish.
Texas returns to the course when it travels to compete in the Haskins Award Invitational on April 5-6 (Saturday-Sunday) in Augusta, Ga.
The Lineup
- Freshman Daniel Bennett carded a 5-under 66 on Tuesday to finish in a tie for second in the individual standings with a 54-hole total of 16-under 197 (65-64-68). He equaled his collegiate best finish, as he previously tied for second at the Southwestern Invitational (Jan. 27-29). Starting on hole 1, Bennett posted birdies on holes 3, 4 and 8 to make the turn at 3-under on the day. He added an eagle on the par-five 15th hole, made a bogey on 16 but responded with a birdie on 17 and par on 18 to close out his 5-under 66. Bennett has now registered three top-five finishes in his first six stroke-play events.
- Junior Christiaan Maas fired a 5-under 66 in the final round to tie for eighth with a three-round score of 8-under 205 (70-69-66). Maas has now recorded six top-10 finishes in his first eight stroke-play appearances this season. During Tuesday's final round, he tallied six birdies (holes 4, 6, 10, 11, 13 and 17) and an eagle on the par-five 15th hole.
- Sophomore Jack Gilbert registered a 1-under 70 on Tuesday to tie for eighth with a 54-hole total of 8-under 205 (67-68-70). Gilbert recorded his collegiate career-best finish, as his previous best was a tie for 19th earlier this fall at the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational (Sept. 30-Oct. 1). He posted four birdies (holes 1, 5, 6 and 15) during his final round.
- Junior Luke Potter carded an even-par 71 in the final round to tie for 44th with a three-round score of 1-over 214 (73-70-71). Potter tallied three birdies (holes 10, 11 and 13) on Tuesday.
- Junior Tommy Morrison fired a 1-over 72 on Tuesday to tie for 25th with a 54-hole total of 3-under 210 (70-68-72). Morrison recorded a birdie on hole 13 and an eagle on the par-five 15th hole during his final round.
